oil cooler need advice

planning on getting the oil cooler installed. have a few concerns. 1st, what do they actually remove (bumper, lights, etc) for the install. 2nd my temps never go above 260, so, should i still get it. Also if any of u guys have a detailed install sheet on the oil cooler that would be great.

thanks

oil cooler not neccessary

i work in the service dpt for the largest bmw dealer in the the world. Yes there is much dis assemblement that is involved. it is not neccessary to TRY and have your dealer get one for you. there are no tsb yet. in rare instances people who drive the sh.t out of there car will put it in fail safe mode. inless this happen to you on multiple occurances you do not need to look any farther into this issue. any questions e-mail me at ezrider18@aol.com

if your car doesn't have an oil cooler (ie 17s") and you have this problem, can/will they install an oil cooler?

They should, see this.

N54 Overview

The first new member of the NG6 family is the N54 which will be initially available in the new 335i coupe (E92). The N54 continues the tradition of “efficient dynamics” by meet- ing the customer demand for high performance and the necessary requirements of low fuel consumption and emissions.

The N54 is available as a 3.0 liter engine and features the following:

• Exhaust driven turbocharger (Bi-turbo)
• Air to air Intercooler
• 2nd Generation Direct Injection (HPI) with piezo injectors
• New engine management (MSD80)
• Bi-VANOS
• All aluminum crankcase with iron cylinder liners (similar dimensions to N52)
• External oil cooler Is not installed on my car!
• New high output electric water pump (400 W)
• Aluminum cylinder head with plastic valve cover
• Steel crankshaft

2007 Engine Introduction

They maybe didn't install the oil cooler on some cars because we don't do "Autobahn" driving at speeds above ~130miles/h.

Saying a car running at 260 degree oil temps as being normal and nothing to worry about is crazy. That engine was underengineered not using an oil cooler. It was BMW plain being cheap....

Wait for an aftermarket solution then install that. The stock BMW cooler isn't that large. The other consideration is the thermostat doesn't allow the oil to flow until 240 degrees. My oil cooler on my E36 flows at 180.

I've read anywhere from 180° to 220°F as being the ideal motor oil temp range, and anything over 220°F and the oil loses its ability to cool and lubricate.

However, my car constantly runs 240°F to 245°F with the extra oil cooler.

What does BMW know about their recommended oil and the N54 engine that makes them believe that ~240°F this is the ideal operating temp range? And if they made a mistake, WTF is their problem?

The synthetic oil doesn't lose its ability to lubricate. It even lubes fine at 300F. When the car goes in to limb mode due the oil at 300 is just a safety mechanism to protect other parts in the motor where the oil is actually hotter. (top piston ring, turbo bearing) But then again, from an engineering standpoint it should be installed. For people who drive the car normal the cooler is not necessary. If you go to the track its a different story.

I have the oil cooler retrofit kit and have noticed a improvement in throttle response and power. I recommend having it added if you live in a hot climate(up to 125-130deg in the summer where I live) even if it is at your own expense.

Definitely makes sense to have one where you live.
