4 years later....335i
For the people that has the 335i twin turbo or for the people that owed a twin turbo car other than BMW.. "IF THE CAR'S DRIVEN NICELY AND NOT BEATENED" What you guys think that the turbo will turn out to be like after 4 years.. loud? problems? slower? I really don't know if BMW's turbo is trust worthy? or it is....

after all this time, deciding for/against 328, and now 335, you still haven't decided on a car

The actual turbo's are built by Mitsubishi. I don't think premature turbo wear will be an issue. The toll that the heat takes on the rest of the motor, that may be another story....

Companies that "pioneered"/have experience in turbo-charging in mass produced cars in gasoline applications like Saab, volvo, and vw (just the first 3 that came to mind) all hit bumps in the road and eventually worked things out. So i would expect there to be some issues and some learning, but I have enough faith in BMW that atleast the engine is sorted well enough to handle the power, I am curious to see how the electronics and the turbos hold up. Being a Saab owner as well as a BMW owner (so i'm not really biased either way) i can say from experience that turbocharging is/can be reliable long term. I have a 1991 9000 turbo for a beater and it has about 290k on it with the original motor and i still have good compression on all 4 and no consumption (except a little from a somewhat tired turbo) even running almost 20psi and not exactly driving conservatively. Of course they have been doing it since the 70's continuously and should have it figured out. Before this turns into a 5000 word post i'll ge to my point. Long term durability shouldn't be an issue with proper engineering and BMW is known for their engineering and having one of the most praised motors in the industry (the inline 6) so theres hope.

If i am thinking right the turbos are part of the manifold so that will suck for replacement as for as cost, but the mitsu twin scroll td-04 on the 2.8v6 in the saab 9-3 is that way as well so maybe thats becoming an annoying trend.

I have a 20 year Mitsubishi. 180k still on original turbo and engine and 1 head gasket replacement.
If I remember correctly Mitsubishi suggests let the car idle for 1 minute after hard driving to let cooler oil pass through the turbo. I have read the E90 manuals and as of yet found any such reference.

BMW has turboed its disels for some time now. Although it is their first gas turbo engine in quite a long time I doubt the turbos will be an issue. The Mitsubishi turbos are reliable and should last fine. Most of the long term owners will probably be upgrading the turbos in the future anyway as more aftermarket development happends.

There are a lot of people on here that are willing to pay extra money to hear their turbos spool louder... If this is the deciding factor, and ur worried about reliability, check out www.lexus.com they make reliable, comfortable, smooth and quiet cars...

Honeywell make a good turbo. BMW makes a good engine. I think they'll be fine. That said, I'm not keeping mine more than 3 years.

Are you really going to keep the car after 4 years, when the warranty expires? Regardless any its components reliability, I would like to get myself something new to drive.

dude, the 335i have the quietest turbo car i've never own/driven. i want it louder, much louder, but it doesn't get any louder...maybe a tiny bit more with an exhaust. don't worry about it...
