Sun protection or no sun protection

Hi there wondered what the general view as on Sun protection glass 320D M Sport.

My concern is that it makes the car look like it belongs to a gangsta but what i like about it is that it makes the car look like it belongs to a gangsta so you can see my dilemma. (I hope you noticed the spelling its because i am down wit the youth init)

Gansters don't drive diesel saloons, you are quite safe

Personally I always spec it as I like the fact people cant see through the back of my car and I'm sure it does help keep the car a little cooler in the Summer if you park with the back of the car to the sun. I think aesthetically it looks nice as well

...and if you have kids it certainly looks a whole lot better than those dopey, ill-fitting suction cup 'blinds' you see on so many cars these days.

I'd go for it personally, think it looks nice and I have a dog so think it might offer some heat protection. Although I read somewhere that the sun glass protection doesn't actually offer any UV protection, only film tints or the 'Sun Blind' options do.

How true this actually is, I have no idea.

Anecdotally, when's the last time you got tanned/sunburnt driving with the windows closed?

Personally, I think the privacy glass looks good on an estate but I'm not too fussed on a saloon.

Sun protection glass turns your saloon into a van lookalike!
IMO it looks completely wrong!
With standard glass, even driving in the hot sun in France, I have had no probs with the aircon in keeping cool!
But SPG may have a use for courting in the layby!

Just picked up a new 320d M Sport with SPG and love it. It is dark, but it really finishes the car!

A must for me. Especially with young children.

I think the car looks much better with it SPG too.

Opinions, as always, are split and I was undecided until I factored in our dogs, who would benefit from a bit less direct sunlight. Without the dogs.. I probably wouldn't have bothered.

You're correct. Uv rays that tan you can't get through glass but infrared can. I.e you can get hot in your lounge but not tanned. SPG reduces,the infrared and the heat.

Each to his own, unfortunately I didn't spec it but I really regret not doing so.

I think it looks excellent on lighter coloured cars - and offers privacy for those in the back - have been looking at some after-market options but really worried that they won't be quite as good.

Why do they need this? Are they doing something especially vile in the rear compartment? Is the car a rolling bordello? Are they VIPs? Pointless option and a waste of money especially as it looks so odd and ruins the looks/lines of the car.

They're my kids in the back, so yes - VIPs that have cost me a lot of money!!!

Will it not be too dark and dingy for them? Children like/need light to uplift their mood and they do need some Vitamin D3. Anyway, the UK does not have much strong sunshine with more grey days than sunny ones, so I still don't see the point of this option.

I specced it on my F31, and had also specced the integral sunshades. Was talked out of the latter by the dealer because he reckoned the sun protection glass was good enough to prevent dazzle to the sprog in the back. On a driving holiday to France last month she begged to differ (it didn't cut out that much) - so sucker cupped blind + SPG it is!

Looks great on my mineral grey car, and to be fair you can't really see the add-on blind through it :-)

I think it looks better on touring than saloon.

I personally went for the integral blinds as they do a better job of keeping the sun out of the kid's eyes and in the long dark winter days you aren't stuck with an overly dark interior.
