Clunking from steering with ignition off

Morning everyone. This seems to be a characteristic of the electric steering, but I just thought if canvas overall opinion. I have searched the forum and read the various threads, but just quickly:

With the engine off, does your steering make a knocking when turning either side of centre? I know the power steering pump isn't on, so it won't move far, but it'll be enough to know. The opinion seems to be that most cars do it, but I'm just trying to see if any don't.

Just been to the dealer to chat to them. Service guy said his does it and he thinks they all do it. He even came and felt mine and said he'd seen it a fair bit before. Maybe it's even been introduced with the updated steering rack? There's absolutely nothing with the engine running nor on the move. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.

I think there's almost as many with as without. And I wonder if all the cars of a certain spec will. Oh well, seems like it's nothing to worry about!

Now more with clunks than without!
As long as there is no clunk when driving, does it really matter?
We are a really fussy lot.

I don't think it's a problem. I suspect certain set ups / build dates do and others don't. Otherwise, it's quite a number of people with exactly the same problem ;-)

Every car does that. That's the steering lock engaging. Nothing to do with transmission.

Thanks for the reply. But my car hasnt got a steering lock (and searching it seems its either the auto box or uk spec hasn't). I thought it was odd, but my car definately hasnt got the steering lock on it. Weird! I've even tried opening the car and leaving the key outside, but no lock!

You have a steering lock. If you sit in the car for a while with the ignition off you will hear it engage and it will disengage when you dip the clutch pedal.

I have a knock from the osf which is noticeable mainly when turning left on an uneven road surface. I can replicate the exact noise while rocking my steering wheel when the engine is off.

I am having a few small problems with my car and this knock is one of them. I was in the dealers yesterday for the master tech to have a look and he says he knows what it is. Due to holidays (mine and his) I can't get it in for a month. I will let you know what they do when I go back.

Mine is a 320D Sport with manual transmission.

That's the thing.... I have an auto and I don't think the autos have a steering lock. I think because it's locked in P anyway, it doesn't have one. I had an E90 320D manual, so I know about it locking as you get out and unlocking as you hit the button.
