Winter wheel selection
Ordering my F31 Msport with Msport brakes and 19"s so I have to have 18" winter wheel/tyre combos. Been offered these for around £1,900 all in with Pirelli winter run flats which do you think will look the best. In order they appear style 397, 415?

397 looks better. But as a winter tyre, the 415 doesnt expose the wheels as much to the elements, if that matters?
I would choose the 415 as it's nice to have something a bit different on for a few months of the year.

Dont fancy either. I got a set of 18" Msport when I bought the car with the 19s. I didn't want the winter narrower square set up, as only really of use if snow most of the time. I am fitting Michelin Pilot Alpins in std Msport front and rear sizes (by conincidence the tyres arrived today and are hopefully being fitted as I speak.
Only problem is storage as am waiting until Autumn to sell my X5 winters and not much room left in the garage, not going to be popular if they go in a spare bedroom. |

I've just bought a used set of 397's with winter tyres. The only thing to remember is that the 397's have a diamond cut face and I'm not sure how resilient that will be to the road salt.
Mine are going to be refurbished (stripped and powder coated) and I may well have them simply finished in silver for that reason. |

No, not for the winters, choice is pretty poor and very expensive. I won't be far from home when the winters are on so if the worst happens can get rescued without problem if the puncture is too bad for the gunge spray.
Was put off run flats when had a puncture in my x5 and tyre warning system gave no indication, only found out when cornering fairly hard, not good. Managed without a puncture on non run flats for the last 10 years until the above x5 incident. |

I ran the 397s + Sottozeros last year. Couldn't fault them, and they look great on the car. Think I posted a few pics in an earlier post.

Just got the wheels back with the Pilot Alpins fitted, they come with 2 years free roadside assist (locally via the tyre shop who fitted them) so as I wont be going far afield happy not to have run flats.

I have ordered my 320xd MSport with 19" wheels and Msport brakes (part of the Msport+ pack). I have been assured by my dealer that the 17" steel winter wheel package will fit. Is that the case?
Thanks! |

You can get the 19" 403Ms on eBay brand new with tyres for round £1600 these days.
Add another £900 for winter tyres...total of £2,500 but you have a nicer looking alloy and a brand new set of summer tyres! |

I keep looking for these alloys on Ebay but i have seen only one wheel in the last few weeks and none of the 18" Msports and unfortunately on top of that there is only one winter tyre available in a run flat and they are over £300 per corner for the 19"l

If you fit non BMW wheels you are straight into modified car on the insurance but i suppose i should check how much extra it is.

the wheels are the 18" M sport (400M), the tyre sizes are the std 225/45R18 front, and 255/40R18 rear. My whole objective is to keep the std M sport size. I had the square BMW winter set up which I used over a number of years on 2 E92 M3s but found that in the uk with relatively little snow the rear end grip in conditions other than snow was compromised.
It is strongly advised to tell the insurance company when you switch over to different wheels, they have never charged me any extra. |

Part of deal when bought car so not really possible to separate real cost. Full price is I think about £400 each. In my experience if well looked after will command a good used price so cost of ownership reasonable.
The pilot Alpins cost £170 ish each fitted. |

Ignore the run flats - there is no need for them. You have to ask yourself why the M badged cars don't come with run flats!
