2nd gear hard to engage! Anyone else ?
Anyone having difficulty going from 1st to 2nd? I thought this would get smoother, but I am at 3800 miles and its still tough.
All other gears are fine...just that 2nd gear! Need to go to dealer ? thanks skimo |

Is it just when ur shifting near the redline or hard launches or is it just all the time. My 330i was very hard to engage when shifting into 2nd during a hard launch, it went away in time.

I dont think that its CDV related (or is it?), its feels like I have to exert extra force to put the shifter into 2nd....exactly like that feeling you get when you are going above, say, 20mph and try to put the stick into 1st...... |

I have similar problems shifting from 1st into 2nd but I believe it is due to the transmission being cold. After I drive (shift) for a little while it always goes away. My dads 997 Porsche does the exact same thing. So try heating it up a little bit and see if that makes a difference.

How many miles do you have on yours?
My 1-2 shift was a little tough at first, but certainly went away with time... They have to make those gears more robust because theyw ill have the tendency to take the abuse versus the other gears... |

Doesn't like to be rushed from 1-2. Only way I've every gotten it to be really smooth is cluth to the floor, move lever into neutral and let it sit there a split second, then it usually slides into 2nd nice and smooth without any of the gnashing.
Only problem is, you can't exactly do that real fast. |

I definitely notice additional resistence into 2nd. The 1-2 shift and 3-2 downshift sucks. In addition to the harder shift, upshifting into 2nd is also more lurch-prone than any other upshift.

My car is the same. pretty hard to get into 2nd. uses alot more force then other gears.
I let my friend drive it and he noticed the same thing, so it wasn't only me. Hopefully it will go away when i have more km's on the car. I now have 200km's |

Try to install a modified CDV....I just did!!! You will see a night and day difference in the way the clutch egages during shifting. It's such a cheap mod that anyone who has a 6 speed MT should do it.

This sounds like a synchronization issue. There have been posts that keeping on the gas longer keeps the RPM up to match 2nd gear, or wind out to higher RPMs before shifting so RPMs stays high during the shift.. This IS completely what a modern synchronized transmission is supposed to do for you, but you play the cards you're delt.
A older German friend was telling me about the old unsychronized days, and about RPM matching to shift without clutching. Ouch! I am mildly disappointed in the shifting, but I'm getting better. I'm skeptical of the CDV mod, but open minded. The CDV is not a syncho issue that I can tell. CM
