Nah. No real rational reason for replacing them in pairs. If it needs one already, it was defective from day one. The others should be fine.

Guess what, replaced my passenger side motor mount a month's ago and now noise from driver side motor mount, just got back dealer and they will replace it under warranty again, but, how is this possible? Drove it for only 6 months, delivered on 02/13, manufactured on 08/12. 8k miles on it.

turn off everything in cabin, shift between drive and reverse(doesn't matter if the brake is applied), when the car is making slight movement, a squeaky noise comes from firewall area.

Interesting. In some cars, broken engine mounts lead to coolant hoses and the fans getting together when the engine moves. Sounds like you issue was much more subtle, luckily.

I have a similar symptom... I thought it was the steering wheel. I'll have to look into this.

Going back to earlier statement that they don't need to be replaced in pairs. If one fails and is not replaced immediately, the vibration can damage the other two. If one fails and it takes a while to diagnose, I replace all 3.

Had one fail on one BMW car, 2014 435 @ 35K miles. Never happened before or after on any BMW I had. Poor part QA?
Only other mount failure I had in about 60 years of driving was on a 1962 409/409 4MT Impala. Can't imagine why that happened. I would check the other two but I it was caught right away a single replacement should be good to go.

Either it must be reall bad quality, or something is hurting the mounts. However, they just replaced the front engine mount. I´ve heart, there might be a third mount?? Edit: car has only 22t km, 14t miles on it. |

There is a rear mount under the transmission behind the spot the engine is bolted onto the bell housing. If they fail that fast, something must be wrong to cause excessive vibration (timing???). A motor mount is not complicated - a piece of very hard rubber (or some plastic equivalent), and attachment points on the top and bottom.

I understand the motor mounts are designed to shear as a safety feature in the event of a collision.
I had a squeak under the hood that the dealer could not pinpoint for 2 years. Whenever I brought the car in for service they tried unsuccessfully to isolate. (Irritating squeak or rattle at idle - 2 liter diesel kind of rough idle to start with). Finally problem was identified as a broken motor mount. They only replaced one. That’s when I researched and found the mounts are designed to break/shear for safety reasons and they actually fail quite often. I suspect due to bumpy roads - possibly extreme breaking? Lots of potholes here in boston. |

Anyone attempt this by themselves? I had issues with my exhaust rattling and more recently the air intake breaking a clamp, suspect engine movement due to a bad mount. have over 165K miles and think it is time to swap all (3) mounts. But would love to see a video of how to do it on my '14 320i xDrive...
