For those who say the extended platinum warranty is a bad decision...

My car had been running like crap for about two weeks, My original 4/50k warranty was about to be up. Due to work, personal, etc reasons I couldn't get the car to the dealer.

Finally one night a SRT8 Magnum decided to show off with his gf in the car around some twisties and I took off on him, car ran into engine malfunction/limp mode, left it overnight in my garage and started it the next morning. Sounded like I was driving a diesel truck.

Took it to the dealer, paid $50 diag fee, and had a few pieces around the charge and intake piping replaced. Not sure on the total dollar amount but the parts alone were around $800 and change, minus labor.

If I didn't have the extended I'd be out at least $1,500 right now as a ballpark. Not bad considering what I paid for the platinum.

Just my thoughts.

So with the extended warranty did you pay any out of pocket to help get your vehicle fixed? Is your extended warranty through AUL?

So basically divide the dealer marked price by at least 4 and you have the Indy mechanic rate for the same job. Then you take 25% off of that price and that was the cost to the actual insurance company from the pre-negotiated/preferred pricing.

Typical pump up the receipt to make it seem like you are getting a deal when you really aren't. I'm pretty sure for $500 you could have gotten a nice ER Charge pipe and Tial BOV VTA and installed it yourself in about 30 minutes.

Insurance is pretty much a scam to make you think you get a value.

I'm not sure how much I paid (can get the exact figure from my receipts if I look up) but it was in the low $2k's I think.

The warranty is direct from bmw, no third party so whatever company bmw uses for warranty is what I use. I just show up, pay the normal diag fee then get things fixed. No other out of pocket unless it's a rubber hose or some other minor thing.

I mean labor wise, yes -- inflated value -- but parts wise for those that like to keep things oem (not sure if there is an aftermarket company that makes oem parts for the charge/intake pipes) the cost remains the same. Of course the dealer is going to be more expensive.

You're right, could have gone aftermarket if I made the choice but I'm keeping things oem for now.

I've never had any good luck with indy places -- a shop down here that was supposed to take out my aftermarket suspension and set things back to oem used nylon lock nuts from homedepot to substitute for oem nuts because the dealer was closed. Kind of a bit jaded.

Calm down judge joe brown.

My factory warranty expired a few weeks ago, I've only had the extended in place for the past two weeks.

so? You are still down about a $1k on breaking even and might not have any further issue.

If you've only had it for that short amount of time and already got about $1k back from what you paid for it. I'd say its worth it. You still got a lot of time left and anything could happen.

Um, its still good for the next 3+ years and I'm 100% sure now that its going to pay for itself.

If I decide to get rid of the car before it ends I get a large percentage of my money back.

quite a few ppl change the stock charge pipe with aftermarket. or those who run a tune at least.

if you drive a lot, the extended warranty might be worth the gamble. although with the turbos covered in the us, im not sure i would take it.

If you got a platinum warranty for the low $2K's, you got a killer deal. They typically start in the low $3K's depending on the model and length of the warranty. For example, the last time a checked, a 1 year (5 year total) platinum warranty for a 335i was around $3100. A 2 year (5 years total) platinum warranty was $3600, and a 3 year (7 years total) warranty was $4200. All of those are for up to a total of 100K miles. If you don't put many miles on your car, you can get a 3 year (7 years total), 70K mile platinum warranty for around $3800. I looked into a platinum warranty for my car and each plan was about $500 more than the 335i prices so I decided to take the chance. I'm now at 70K miles and so far, so good (knock on wood).

best extended warranty is one with prorated refund...unlike the bmw plans, after a claim
