The Carbon buildup photo thread!

I just had a carbon clean done and haven't seen many as bad as this!

I bought the car second hand and by the looks of it - the previous owner never took it over 3000rpm!

I challenge someone to find worse!

Platform: N54 (335i)
Miles / Kilometers: 85,000 K's

Post em up!

Are there certain times that you should have these done? Like at certain mileage marks? Would love to know.

I'll be contributing to this soon. I'm not excited to see how bad it is. I haven't seen any proof that it's ever been done and I'm at 92k.

OP, how many miles?

EDIT: Can you tell a difference in the way that the car performs after cleaning?

Edited original post to include platform and miles / k's.

While the power increase was there albeit not as noticible, the responsiveness was worth every penny.

Idle is rock solid now as well.

Those are the 2 problems that I'm looking to resolve. My idle can be a tad on the shakey side at times and I'm experiencing some significant turbo lag. Since I'm completely stock except for DCI's, I've been telling myself that the lag is likely because of the carbon buildup. Does that sound like how your car was?

Just got a quote from a dealer, here for $300 for walnut blasting which is a bit cheaper than the manual soaking and cleaning from a local performance shop.

I don't believe you have direct injection, so no. Your 535i is not immune however

No, not really. N52 is port injection, N54 is Piezo DI. The lack of any agitating agent over the intake manifold and valves is what causes the carbon buildup. Every time you give throttle gas is washing over the valves, that doesn’t happen on the N54 unless you spray meth. So nothing to worry about for you.

I just had my car done at 50xxx, mine were actually not too brutal. But the car idles better, and the combination of OCC/PCV upgrades/meth should keep it clean going forwards. I’ll see if I can get a picture up tonight, it’s on my phone.

I called my local dealership (BMW Murrieta) in California to get a quote for Walnut Blasting and was quoted $810 plus the cost of shells which he mentioned run about $50.

For those of you who have experience in this field, is that a pretty standard quote or is it on the high side?

I've seen people say they've paid $150 and seen others say they've spent $1000. After seeing this thread I feel like it's a must have service especially for my E90 (115,000 miles) but I don't want to spend way more than I need to.

Anything over $500 is more than you should be paying IMO.

It's at least a few hundred dollars higher at $810, then it should be. $500 or so is about the going rate in my area.
