335xi Sub Install

Hi there. So I just bought a 2010 335xi coupe. I happen to have a JL Audio 10W7 and a JL Audio HD 750/1 amp sitting in my garage. So I decided to go get it put in this past weekend.

My first mistake: I went to Car Toys. They wanted $627.94 to install it. They said that because the Nav unit doesn't have a subwoofer output control, they needed to wire in a knob and flush mount it under the dash to allow control of the sub.

Now, it's been a very long time since I looked at car stereos or pricing, but this seemed insane to me. That's a lot of money when the sub is already built into a box with the amp mounted to it, ready to go.

So, my question is, what should I be looking to pay for this install? I assume some knob to control the sub is indeed necessary? Does anyone have any recommendations in the Renton or Seattle, WA area to get this done? Even Portland, OR would be good as I am there quite a bit.

Thanks is advance for any help!

Musicar NW in Portland, OR is the best place you can take your car to. What system do you have? Base, hifi, or logic 7? If your not sure do you have tweeters in the front or a center speaker on the dash?

It's the base stereo. There's no tweeters. From what I can tell it looks like speakers in the doors, near the side armrests in the rear and under the front seats. I don't see anything else.

Also, is that 10W7 going to completely overpower the base stereo? I've noticed already that the base system isn't very loud and I know this sub can hit decently hard.

It depends on alot of things. How much power you have going to the w7, what type of box, where its mounted in the trunk, what type of music you listen to, etc. Honestly, I don't think a single 10 would be too much bass regardless of how you have it setup. However, there are other things that could be upgraded that would give better results such as an amp, front speakers, and underseat subs.

There isn't really a harness already made that would allow you to install your sub without cutting wires. You either need to tap into the signal for the underseats or the full range signal from the front channels before it gets crossed over to the doors and underseats.

What I would do is get both the male and female connectors that plug into the underseats. You'll need 1 of each for each side. Tap into the signal there and run speaker wire back to the trunk from both sides into a line output converter. That way you dont have to cut or tap into any of the stock wiring.

Or as mentioned just take it to Musicar NW and let Ken take care of it for you.

Sweet, that will be my next stop. Anyone in particular I should ask for?

Any idea what something like this should cost?

I actually just talked to Ken (recommendation from another forum) and he was great! He's hooking me up with some info.

And of course I immediately wanted to know more about the level 2 upgrade they have for the 3 series. I think I might have made a mistake lol!

Anyone know how good that level 2 sounds? Would it be good with that 10W7?

It would sound great, especially if you used a corner enclosure for the w7.

Might be worth your while to take a trip to Portland.

Maybe he could demo some stuff for you, then you would really know
how his systems sound .
You need to modify that base system you already know
how bad the base system is so you will get that with overwhelming bass
if you just put in a sub.

I've been in contact with Ken for the Level 2 upgrade for my F30. Like you, I started with the Level 1 and now want the Level 2 (my wife pushed me to the 2). My wife and I are considering driving to Portland from Irvine, Ca so MNW can install it. We were going to fly to Portland soon anyway so might as well kill two birds with one stone.
