Burning oil

In September I got the warning light that I needed to add a quart of oil. No big deal since I had 4500 miles/5 months on the car. Went to the dealer and they topped it off.

Today I got in the car and it is a quart low again with only 4900 miles on the car now. I have been driving it less, but a quart in 400 miles seems like an awful lot even for not driving it. Never had an issue with my M3 which was driven the same amount. Anyone seeing anything similar? Needless to say I am a little stressed about it.

Can you guys talk me off the ledge and tell me it is no big deal!!?

Do you know what oil they topped up with?

I notice 5w-30 burns faster than 0w-40, or 5w-40

I am wondering if the car needed more than just 1 litre at 4500 miles, and the sensor has just now re calibrated enough to let you know to put more in. I wouldn't be too concerned at the moment. Get it back to full and check daily. Hopefully you won't need anymore oil for another 1500 miles.

They top with 5W-30 at the dealership. Although I've heard good things about using Castro Edge 0w-30.

They recommend 0-30 grad here in the UK now, all BMW dealerships should ONLY use this.

Going to drop it at the dealer tomorrow before I head out to Austin for the F1 race. I think it has been less than 800 miles since they added a quart and I am positive it has been less than 1000. Hopefully I am wrong!

So far, my car's oil consumption has been as follows.

1,230 miles: run-in service (but I noticed that the oil was not even nearly filled to max - the service advisor says that they put in the required quantity)

1,730 miles: 1 litre (but note above - I think it only actually used 2/3 of a litre over the 500 miles, but still ...)

2,530 miles: 1 litre

3,700 miles: 1 litre

4,600 miles: 1 litre

5,995 miles: 1 litre

But, it's clear to me that the car is very sensitive (as you'd expect) to the type of usage, which has to be judged by operating hours. A large proportion of my car's operating hours have been spent in appalling London traffic. Over the past 1,400 miles, I've done a bit more motorway driving and the car's oil consumption has dropped correspondingly.

All in all, I'm not surprised (and am definitely not complaining) at the rate of oil consumption given that I don't use Stop/Start and have that big v8 sitting for long periods in traffic.

I love this car! It brings a big smile to my face every time I see it or drive it.

Your consuming oil at a rate of about 1,000mi/quart. It's a lot. I've owned a Porsche that consumed 800mi/quart, so I understand how annoying it can be.

You might be getting some (or a lot) of turbo blow by (leaking oil through turbos), thus the reason your M is consuming so much oil. What year is your M?

Just a guess though.. there was a SIB on this issue for the N63TU (not the S63TU).

There is no SIB on the S63TU for anything related to engine oil consumption.

+1 1500 miles, no oil added except for the break-in service. I check the oil level once a week and it's always full.

Guess the hard break-in procedure works.

Hard brake-in works 3800 miles now still full.

I have just had the third top up and mines just done 10,000 miles, which is not bad compared to other M5's I have had......

On the last trip to the dealer the key actually confirmed the car required oil, on the previous two visits the key didn't agree with the on board computer.

I add oil to my car every 4,000mi. I didn't perform a hard break-in. I followed manufacturer spec and got harder on the car towards the end - but never exceeded the running in limitations.

Agreed , I'm at full at 2400 miles no oil added , was full at the time of service too . And my CP M6 does 8.09 60-130 and hits 128 GPS speed in the 1/4 mile .

My car was built in May 2012. My 911 turbo hardly uses any oil at all. I guess my only concern is longevity of the engine/turbos (not the oil consumption itself). I will raise it at the next service, but suspect that I'll just get a blank look from the service guy.

Had to add oil after driving 1200 miles. The dealer recommended 0w40. Anyone uses that oil as well?
