N54 Question on Oil Filter housing DIY

I read the DIY, but why do you have to remove the Air Filter box?
Any good reason, other than removing obstructions?

Thanks in Advance.

You remove it to get better access to the OFHG and also the bolts on the manifold which have to be loosened or removed to move the manifold back or you cannot get the 3rd torx bolt holding it on...

if you remove the cowl, it literally takes you 2 mins to remove the filter. The cowl itself is 5 mins.

Cowl, windshield cowl?
Or intake filter box cover?

But thank you.
Going to tackle this this weekend.

It's not hard, but deceivingly tedious. Make sure you have the correct tools, for example the proper torx socket (personally wouldn't trust using a metric socket as a substitute and risk rounding off the oil filter housing bolts) and a magnetic pickup tool for removing and replacing some of the hard-to-reach intake manifold nuts. You may also want to consider manually cleaning the intake valves at the same time since you'll have done 90% of the work to get to them by the time you're ready to remove the housing.

Anybody know the size of the torx needed to take of the OFH?

Mine appears to be coming from the oil cooler gasket, but I'm thinking I might as well just do both gaskets.

You need an E10.
That is inverted Torque size.

Don't mean to thread jack but i'm considering cleaning my valves too after taking off the manifold to better access the OFH bolt and replace the gasket, I plan to do it manually with a wire brush and brake cleaner, does anyone know of a different way to close the valves besides using the starter method, or does it matter too much if carbon deposits fall into the engine block (cause won't it get burned up any way?) Ive searched around and couldn't find more info, thanks
