Anyone with a Diesel engine with no customary clatter?

My F30 no longer has the customary Diesel clatter when idling whether the engine is hot or cold. It has a wonderful deep sound like an ultra powerful sports car with a V12 petrol engine. In fact, it never clatters even when I accelerate really hard but gives out a deep growl which alerts (in a nice, envious way) passers by. Performance is quite stunning.

Anyone noticed this of their 6cyl Diesels?

Am I losing my marbles?

BTW, my hearing is perfect.

I've always found a 6-cyl BMW diesel to sound pretty damn good. I'm not sure the F31 we have sounds quite as good as my E90 330d manual did. It sounded better than the auto version I had after that for some reaso, even though they were almost identical otherwise.

Does the 335d sound any different to the 330d? I wouldn't have thought so but I only got to test a 330d and a 320d (which obviously sounded different).

Haven't driven the F30 330d, but e93 330d and f30 335d are completely different

Come on MWA or Howay as they say round here.

You've got to tell us what different means?

The 330D is the best sounding diesel I have ever heard. Sound is important to me.

It gives a creamy 6 cyl purr on startup. A rich V8 howl under acceleration. An idle note that is deep and manly.

Clatter is almost but not totally absent. It:

- only happens between 600 and 1,500 RPM
- only happens when cold
- happens less with premium fuel

Haha! First of all those of you who have the F30 330d please take no offence, this comment is in reference to the E93 LCI 2012 330d v 335d F30.. NOTE; i haven't had the joy to drive the F30 330d to compare..

The 330d always reminded me it was a diesel and there was never a joyful sound from the engine. Power was great but never seemed good enough, (previous to that was M3)...

The F30 has a lot more characteristics. 1, the engine has the V8 roar sound to it and once you're past 1st gear you can't tell much it's a diesel. Power wise there are two turbos, which always keep you going.

Had the car over two months now, and it never failed to put a smile on my face every time i drive it.. The e93 was very crashy, unlike the F30, which seems to sail away over bad surfaces.

I have the adaptive suspension and vss steering! Both highly recommended! The 335 never feels weak! It's extremely comfortable to drive and can be a monster over taking most cars on the road when you want it.

I love the car, since I find it very economical for the performance, comfortable and powerful!

Don't think I would want to replace it at all

What fettle Mara as they say round here!!

Great description of how the car grips you.

Can't wait until I get the same vibes in March for my 335D.

PS Also have the adaptive suspension and VSS in my spec.

E93 LCI 2012 330d
interesting i had a E92 330d LCI and after somebody rear ending me i got a E93 330d LCI and it was rubbish compared to my car.

The performance was missing probably because of the weight and the handling and steering felt massively heavy compared to my E92 i was sooo glad to get shot of it.

I have just moved from the E92 330d to the F30 330d (PPK gets fitted on the 5th of Feb ) and the car feels much quicker than my E92 LCI, just passed the 1,000 miles mark so gave it a little go in sport before going back to ECO PRO until i have a few more miles on it.

I think the new 8sp aoutbox has alot to do with this, and maybe they have fitted a better / different turbo (i have no idea tbh).

I also love the steering (i have VSS) it is actual better than the E92 (albeit no feedback when pushing the car hard, which i don't do)

How many miles have you racked up now F30?

I must admit I am really looking forward to reaching this point in my new car - I love the torque of a diesel engine but I've never liked the hackney carriage clatter that my 320d carries around.

I wonder if it's the slight slurring you get with a torque converter auto as you start off that interferes with the sound?

It will sound wonderful. Even better as it is powered by the juice of the gods.

I am ashamed to say just 2000 miles as I hardly use the car. Is that not shocking? I hope to rack up some miles when a do a European trip this year.

I was surprised how noisy the F30 320d ED engine was in the example I had on hire, one of the worst BMW diesels I've ever heard. Loud inside and outside the cabin.

I find the engines are very varied across (and within) the models, not just the internal sound levels, but outside idling and the drive by diesel clatter.

My son has an E83 X3 3.0sd, (sequential turbos as the 335d) has a decent outside sound track for a diesel from idle, even in the X3 installation. My E91 M57 engine was about average, but quieter on premium fuel.

There are reasons why, including tolerances, (partly shows in the cold to hot sound track), fuels can make a difference and of course the injection strategy, post injection phasing, pulse width, etc.. I sense BMW are getting lower emissions in some engines like the ED, with fine tuning of the injection strategy, but with the cost of a bit more injection clatter.

When a 12 cyl was mentioned here I was reminded of the sound of BMW's fantastic M70 engine (V12, 5 ltr, 300 hp). I had the privilege to be at its very first presentation to the public at the time. The then going rumour was, you would be able to put a 5 Deutschmark coin on its edge onto the block of the running engine and it wouldn't fall over, even if you'd rev up the engine a little. So smooth was this engine said to be running.

I decided to verify this claim on the day, took a coin with me and asked the BMW reps to prove it. Lo and behold, they were right. The coin wouldn't fall. I still have the photos I took on this day somewhere.

/Back on topic: I have changed just 11 days ago from a M54B22 6-cyl engine to the much more modern N20 (in a F34). I had serious concerns if the N20 could be anywhere near as smooth as the M45, mainly because it is 'only' a 4 cyl. I did also test drive the equivalent 2 ltr Diesel. The Diesel was remarkably good, very impressive. But in my view you can't beat the sound of BMW's petrol engines, or to be more precise, the lack of noise. Very glad that I bought what I bought.
