Question Why isn't the selected gear displayed on the dash for manual gearboxes?

Is it as you can tell which gear you are in for manuals (position of gear lever) whereas for automatics it's slightly harder?

Auto has a TCM which knows what gear you're in, not sure there's the equivalent on a manual transmission to send info to display.

^ There must be as there's an optimum shift indicator on ED cars which tell you to shift up or down

This can be coded quite easily and is active in some markets.

Enlighten us
AFAIK, its few limited cars which can have it coded. Majority are exclusions.

Question to OP, why would you like to know what gear are you in?
Surely you are changing it and not the passenger.

I turned mine off! I think it's press and hold the button on the end of the left hand upper stalk if I recall...

Shift indication can be coded but actual gear can't is what I meant to say, the gearbox on a manual doesn't have individual sensors for each gear. Enlighten me if I'm wrong.

Isn't shift indication based on rpm?

That's right, although the car obviously knows what gears it's in to suggest its next shift either up or down, which was part of the efficient dynamics.

Does it actually know which gear though or does it suggest by RPM?

That's a good point, it's probably worked out by RPM in relation to the speed your doing.
