Cool Glasstec Paul - Windscreen Replacement Review

http://www.glasstecpaul.com/

The guy is a ****ing genius. My E92 windscreen was badly pitted. I got in touch with Paul and I was given a range of recommendations for a replacement with crystal clear pricing.

So what happens next? I argued it out and had it replaced under AUC warranty by using the Sale of Goods Act. The dealership shit a brick on this one it was hilarious. The panicky answer messages I received of how they wanted to set things straight and that there was no need for trading standards. The pitting was so bad that when the sun was out it was near impossible to see where one was headed.

Turns out Paul was the one who was booked in by the dealership to replace the windscreen! Small world! I had a full viper alarm fitted by Antony from Secure My Car. The wiring was done neatly but when Paul re-installed this it was done perfectly. I cannot fault it. How the sensors and flashing viper logo have all been placed back are spot on with accuracy.

It was a good job that the windscreen was replaced.

Here is the feedback from Paul:

Quote:
A couple of things: whoever installed the Viper did a fairly decent job of tucking the wires in, but, they could have been a bit neater about the whole thing.

For starters, the driver side A-pillar cover was missing both clips (which I retrieved from the side of the dashboard) and the tag in the middle of the screen was stuck to the glass. I have now stuck this to the dash with some double-sided tape so that in the future if you have a screen replaced, the risk of damaging/disturbing the Viper is minimal. I also re-routed the sensors at the top of the screen. The dealership were baulking at the kit to be honest and were suggesting that I should just leave the kit for you to have re-installed. To be honest, the best results are achieved with the screen out so I did it anyway.

It's a good job you did have the screen replaced; on removing the old adhesive, the recommendation is to leave ~0.5mm on the pinchweld as a base to apply the new adhesive to. As you will see from these images, most of it peeled off! Not a good scenario, so I rubbed down the entire surface to rid it of the old, poorly adhered PUR (possibly even a contaminated surface).
Sorry I don't have the images on me to upload but if you are reading this Paul feel free to upload them.

It goes to show that even the factory do not get it right all the time. Sometimes it takes pin point precision from someone who specializes in this trade to set things right.

The work is so good that you cannot even tell that the windscreen was replaced. There is no damage to the body, paint or dash moulding whatsoever. I have had a windscreen replaced before via Admiral Insurance (in Warwickshire) and they almost destroyed the dash board as they used some kind of wire to cut the screen out - it was a two man job. Scrapes were visible when looking into the vehicle - standing outside near the windscreen and looking inside it looked awful. The windscreen was not even placed back into the centre and two months later I found myself adding additional adhesive to o/s base to prevent turbulent air from entering. This time around though... flawless!

Yes, the E92 windscreen is prone to pitting and chipping but it is great to know that there is someone out there who knows their stuff inside out and will go that extra mile to make sure the job is done with nothing less than perfection. May be he is a perfectionist who knows but the pride, passion and knowledge are clearly visible in the work. Some friends I know have had their 335i/M3 windscreen replaced twice already but they didn't know the difference until I showed them mine.

The windscreen looks factory fitted and when I tell people it has been replaced they say "no way." They might of had bad experiences like me but now I know where to go and who to trust. A hard working, honest, attention to detail craftsman is hard to find.

Aftersales support is fantastic and deserves a mention too. The brand new windscreen picked up a chip from some loon on the M4 Reading some weeks ago and Paul has agreed to sort this out. Looking at his website I will be looking forward to the "amazing disappearing windscreen chip" repair.

Cheers buddy!

Glad to hear some good review!

I got some stone chips too, which were repaired by auto glass.

Don't want to replace my windscreen yet, as I heard so many horror stories about the fitting not being right and fucked up rain sensors etc....

Can you tell us more about this 'Glasstec Paul'? The webpage is very scant on detail. Is he a one-man band, or a technician for a larger organisation? What area does he cover?

Doesn't look good that the mobile number given on the webpage seems to be wrong!

The number on the welcome page is the correct number.

Glasstec Paul is a one man band.

As he said. AFAIK he covers London, outside London e.g. Reading etc. and is probably happy to travel.
Sensors were placed back perfectly and all sensors have worked fine and as they should since the replacement.

I asserted the Sale of Goods Act. As the windscreen was so pitted and had a chip I said that there was no way it would pass an MOT and the chip would have cracked anyway... the brand manager hated me for it but it worked. I think the Act only applies when you have brought something new/used approved and you notice something within the first six months of ownership. Worth reading up on it.
