Service Engine Soon Warning Coming On and Off

My 'Service Engine Soon' light comes on and stays on for a while and then when I start again it may or may not come back on. I wanted the Dealer to check the code to see what may be causing this and they want $110 to do an Engine Diagnosis.

I have an ODB-II reader that I use on my 95 Vovlo. Do you think I can use it to pull the codes on the BMW? I guess I could just take it to AutoZone.

When I called the Dealer I found out the plugs were changed at 99K under the warranty and it only has 127K on it now. Just want to know what is causing the warning light to come on. It runs just fine, but I hate warning lights.

All performance cars should come with built in code systems rather than an umbrella CEL/SES!

I would think your OBDII reader would work as long as you have the right software.

If the SES light is on, there will be and OBD-II code you can read. It won't pull the proprietary BMW code but you might not need it. The one you use on your Volvo will work for that purpose.

When are the Steelers going to get it together?

OBDII is a standard diagnostics protcol for all automobiles sold in the US starting with Model Year 1996. It is standard so any shop can use standard OBDII test equipment to read standard fault codes. Any OBDII scan tool will read OBDII fault codes, which presence is indicated by the SES (CEL) notifiaction, in any US car 1996 model year onward. If there is a SES light on in your car, then there is a OBDII fault code present.

The Steelers having two bad years in a row is unusual. Hope the get it together soon while Ben is in his prime.

I will scan it this weekend and see what the codes are there. The light was not on when I came in this morning.
