Why is Bmw charging for M-Dct?

Why isnt the M-Dct standard like on the M5 and just allow customers to opt for the manual transmission at no additional charge? At this price point it should be standard just seems like Bmw is trying to nickel and dime its loyal customers.

The difference is that in every part of the world except for the US, the DCT is the only transmission choice available.

The M3/4 will be available with a manual transmission worldwide.

Totally different cars. It's extremely hard to drive an M5 with manual transmission, in fact, BMW has gone up and beyond to make it work and they said this is the last time they are offering it. I honestly was expecting them to charge extra for MT for M5 due to amount of R&D involved.

M3 is totally different and more manual transmission capable.

They wanted the manual transmission to be standard so they could advertise the lowest possible curb weight and keep the MSRP as low as possible. That being the case they had to charge for the DCT since they certainly weren't going to make it a no-cost option.

No, it's really not that hard to drive an M5 with a manual transmission.

Because enough people want a manual which means they can charge for another transmission option.

I wonder what BMW's cost difference is especially since they didn't just drop the same manual in there.

Uh yeah, I drove the M5 with a manual and it felt smooth as silk. Honestly, I don't know if the M5 could drive better with DCT after what I experienced. I would also say that it was NOT hard to drive at all. It felt natural.

Exactly. This is the same company that charges $2000 for interesting paint colors and $5000 for additional colors of dyed leather and $7000 for a stiffer suspension and a 15HP upgrade. They do that because we pay it.

+1. Also keeps the base price lower. As somebody who will buy another 6MT I appreciate this.

It's a way of saying look how genuine our new car is, its a manual, not some sort of computer game, auto only plaything.
The amount of positive press the inclusion of manual has received worldwide would seem to suggest it's worked.

BMW are in the business of making money. If they think they can charge us without us jumping ship they will. That's about as complicated as it gets.

It should be an extra charge. Why would you think they'd just throw in an option like this when we were worried to death about the starting price of this car. The DCT is not cheap to put it. It's not an "automatic" as you all know. The goal was likely to keep the base price down. And people seem to forget at least BMW gives you an option for a manual. The only other brand that I can think that at this level offers a manual is Porsche. They charge for every little option in the damn car. We are not being nickel and dimed. If you've been shopping around over the past year, driven the comparable cars, and priced well equipped cars, I am a very happy buyer.

It's either BMW or Porsche for me. Maybe a C7 but idk I would need to test drive one first. There just isn't another RWD manual car that competes with the M3 M4 at the moment in this price segment

What was it about the M5 manual transmission experience you felt was difficult when you drove it?

Even the M235i has it standard at no additional cost so it cant be that expensive for them to give it as a standard feature.
