May not be what it is officially for, but it does a very good job of holding the access panel to the spare tire/battery/etc. up and out of the way.

it might be a clip for another accessory, say a tray or net. just a guess.

if this is the case then i wish the E90's have them cause everytime i wanna get something from that compartment i have to use my head to stop the flap coming down.

On E90, you just push the flap a bit up under the part where the speakers are, and it snugs into a groove. Then it will not come down by it self, just tug it loose to close it.

Yeah - on the E90, there's some kind of thing up there to hold it. I thought it was not a groove, but a tab more like the OP. Just push the lid up there, and it will catch and hold it.
