20inch tire size advice needed.

Hello all.

Just pulled the trigger on a set of HRE Flowform wheels and need some help with tire sizes.

2014 335i X-Drive with Dinan lowering springs(once they release).

Specs:
20x8.5 +30mm
20x10 +40mm

The HRE website reccomends 245/30 & 265/30. Doesn't that seem a little thin and stretched? Could I go bigger?

Thanks for the help!

Unless you don't care about clearance (can be dangerous) or a correct speedometer, odometer, and gearing...you should stick with a tire/wheel combination that is the same as the original tire/wheel package. IOW, you want something with the same rolling diameter. How wide you can go is determined by the clearances, and can be critical if you've altered the ride height.

I'm jealous. Which ones did you go with?... You can definitely go with 275 in the rear. Maybe 245/35 up front and 275/30 rear.

Those sizes are pretty good. I have a 275/30 on my 20x10 ET40 on the rear. It rubs when I hit bumps. So I would stick with the 265x30.

In my opinion, I think 30 series just looks too thin, but if you go with a taller profile, you will definitely be on a bigger diameter wheel/tire combo than OEM.

I have a set of 245/35 & 275/30 mpss in my garage - would be ideal to use them

Are you lowered? how bad is the rubbing?

Yes. Lowered on coilovers. It doesn't rub the metal fender but it does rub the inner lining when the spring is compressed enough. I could simply get my camber adjusted to make the rub go away, but it hasn't bothered me enough to get it done.

Definitely not a stretch or thin on the front. The rear wont be square, but I would not say it would be stretching by any drastic measure. I would trust HRE because they probably have seen every combo known to man.

If you go 235 35 20 you will rub in the front. I'm on 8.5 et32 on 235 35 20 and I rub slightly on big bumps.

You will most def run with 275 30 20 in the rear. I'd strongly recommend 265 30 20. There is another member running HRE FF on 265 30 20 Vred tired and he rubs on HR sport springs.

so it sounds like I should adhere to HRE recommendations of 235/30 & 265/30 unless I want to risk rubbing.

It just sounds like a thin/low profile setup and a potentially harsh ride...

Mine are smoother riding than the stock 225/50 run flats so I would not say you are in for a harsher ride especially if you are going the Dinan route. I Guess it depends on what you are comparing.

I have 275 in the rear on a 10" +47 wheel and I'll be moving to a 285 tire when these run out. 285 will fit for me no doubt. If you run 275 with your setup, that's only 2mm further out than what I'm gonna run. I'm almost certain that you'll be fine on that setup... But of course all cars can be slightly different, etc.

You mean 245 30 20 right? Although it's wider, it has a smaller rolling diameter which will work for the HREs.

Check out this thread. Great pics of what I'm talking about with the HREs and tire selection. You're gonna have to run 265 30 20. You'll see why. Pretty similar drop to what you'll get with the Dinan as well. I'm running 265 30 20 on my rears as well (not on HREs though). Sucks but there's only a very limited selection of tires in that size.

Great Thread… Thank you.

I guess the big question is will a Dinan drop be enough to make the rear wheels flush… I really dislike the look of having wheels stick out past the fender.

8.5 et30 front 10 et40 rear will look really nice with a drop. It'll be flush.

From the Dinan website photos, the drop looks similar to the HR sport springs drop so it will most likely stick out past the fenders. You'd prob have to go supersport springs or go coils. The HRE wheels do look very nice. Just wish it was 20x10 et 45.

Remember, This is an X-drive. The rolling diameter of the front and rear have to be within a certain range. Lets say you go with Pilot Super Sports the 245/30/20 have 25.8" diameter, the 265/30/20 have a diameter of 26.3". I can't remember the correct tolerances for the x-drive but the 1/2" is probably outside the range.
I could be wrong. Look into it before you buy!

I went with 20" Velgens on my X-drive at 20x9 and 20x10.5 245/35/20 275/30/20 and there was a .3" diameter difference. I remember it was close to the acceptable range.

Thank you... You guys know your stuff.

It's becoming clear that unless I put an aggressive drop on car the rears will stick out, not something I want.

Does hre offer alternative offsets? I'm going to call rich first thing tmrw morning.

The flow formed wheels are standard offsets. You have to buy their more expensive custom wheels for other offsets. As I said in the thread linked above here, the offsets are way to aggressive for regular fitments. You have to slam the car and fiddle with camber to get it to fit properly.

They are even more aggressive than my 10.5" rears so I don't know why they did this, maybe so that they could fit E9x nice too.
