While this article suggests that it doesn't know where this video came from, I can tell you it happened in Taiwan. Because I recognize the train's livery. This has NOTHING to do with BMW drivers' douchey stereotype. This has everything to do with Taiwanese drivers not obeying traffic laws. It's a huge problem there. It's gotten better over the years, but they still suck at obeying the laws. I make trips there frequently for business and to visit my Dad, and I see near-misses daily. People start rolling into an intersection even before the light turns green, tailgating on the freeway, cars cutting off scooters, and scooters snake their ways around cars in a traffic jam, between car bumpers. You name it.

I'm Taiwanese, and sad for me to say this, but my people are shitty drivers. Not because of some genetic disposition, but they just can't process the notion of thinking collectively for the greater good.

I don't think the commentary and accompanying video had anything to do w/the make of the car (or the race/ethnicity of the driver for that matter).

The driver was simply stupid. Didn't even try to drive out of harms way when it was apparent the the train was coming and had to wait for a "good samaritan" to lift the flimsy cross bar before s/he would even drive forward, when s/he could have easily driven around the cross bar w/o assistance.

Stupidty has no bounds. Unfortunately, we see it everyday. Sometimes w/tragic consequences. Fortunately, this was not one of those incidents.

Wait, hold on a minute. I know it was idiocy and maybe aggressive douchebaggery that resulted in the car being in the middle of the tracks. Everyone everywhere knows you don't play that game on train tracks (well, everyone everywhere is told at some point not to, anyway).

But what I'm confused about is that the car isn't disabled - I thought that at first - but it simply won't move *because the gate is in the way*? Seriously, your options are death by train or scratches on your hood and this driver takes the former? Something else must have been going on there...

I agree - I just figure because he drives a BMW, the author of the article is generalizing that he worries more about the safety of his car than his family lets say, ignoring the fact that this is just a bad driver, and they exist for all car makes.

Don't worry, it's not only in Taiwan. Have you ever seen videos of driving in other parts of the world? I hate to say it, but in much of the world, orderly driving just does not exist.

That said, I was hoping to see a more "exciting" video (not trying to be too draconian though)

I second that... But as someone who lived in Taiwan too (but haven't really gained a first-hand perspective on driving in Taiwan since my family didn't drive, but I have gotten many close calls as a pedestrian though)... Why the hell is there a rail guard on the OTHER side of the tracks so that people WOULD face the chances of getting trapped?

I don't think it counts as "trapped" when your options are minor scratches or annihilated car and death. But it's a fair question, anyway, seems kind of pointless.

Forgot to elaborate... If the guard was still the flimsy material that appears to be a PVC-type material and you're faced with an owner who values his/her life despite a huge lapse in judgment, then by all means. If it's the solid material that the US uses and/or there's not somebody that'll lift the gate (which if I was stupid enough to stop on a track I'd bust the hell out no matter what), I'm sure there's someone stupid enough to duke it out to the bitter end or just hop out of the car and leave it to be train fodder, which again, makes the guard for opposite-direction traffic a safety concern.

I guess I'm just confused how your immediate reaction isn't to use all 240 horses you've got to shove everything in your path out of it :P

Because if you don't block it all the way across the opening, Taiwanese drivers will go around it. Sad but true. Also, you have to realize that there are a ton of motor scooters on that island, so they can snake around the bar if it's only blocking half of the entrance.
