iPhone 5 compatability

I was wondering why I wasn't able to see texts or emails when connected to my M235 until I looked up the compatibility on the bmwusa website. Anyone know if they normally do updates that allow phones without these features to use them in the future?

Isnt this the tech package you'll need?

I have the tech package but on the BMW site if you look up the iPhone 5 it says that email and SMS is not supported

This is really disappointing if a brand new luxury car does not support a nearly 2 year old phone in this day and age...

That's odd that the iPhone doesn't work. My HTC One M8 is the first phone I've owned that actually works with all that stuff.

I usually just use the steering wheel controls to activate Siri and have my messages read to me over the car's speakers. It doesn't distract your eyes, and you don't have to remove your phone from your pocket.

My SMS works on iPhone 5 when plugged into USB. Never tried email.

It only shows up if you receive while driving. Otherwise you can use Siri which imo is more convenient anyhow.

Would you mind describing the steps to use Siri? I didn't realize I could summon her from the steering wheel, and I admit I didn't know I could ask her to read text messages. Do I need to know who the text is from to be able to request a reading?

Thanks!

The BMW Snap-In adapter I just installed works perfectly with the iPhone 5S and my iPOD 5th Gen. All functions and controls. Will try playing a video from it tomorrow.

How do you activate Siri? I would like to know how to do this as well.

Siri is activated by holding down the Talk button on the steering wheel for a couple of seconds, works great.

Also, SMS messages do work through the iDrive, at least to read them. You have to make sure you have it enabled in your phone's settings though.

Setting -> Bluetooth -> Press on the "i" next to the car's connection "BMW 33698" and then "Show Notifications".

I've been able to get SMS to show up in iDrive with iphones. Sending is a "no". On Android, you can use DragonDrive for dictating, but there's nothing for iOS. You have to turn on the notifications for SMS in Settings i.e. Show in Notification Center and Show on Lock Screen. iDrive triggers off the notification.

It's a but underwhelming and I rarely use it. Why? Because the only notification you get in iDrive is a small envelope icon that appears when one comes in. No "ding", no popup message on the HUD, nothing. Do you really want to drive around and check for the icon? Now if you have sound notification for SMS turned on in the phone, AND you are listening to music streaming from your iPhone, you might hear something. Not sure.

I've never been able to get any video, over any interface including snap-in, from any iOS device.

if you're playing music via usb/bluetooth you'll also get notification sounds played through the car speakers. as stated above siri also works by holding down the talk button for a second which you can use to read and respond to messages. i've used it once or twice for quick messages but can't say i'd like to do it all the time.

Yea as for Siri the 2 series is fully compatible with Siri eyes Free mode. Just hold the button for a couple seconds works great.

Try commands like:
Read me my messages
Send message to

I figured it out - thanks tho - so strange how these functions are so buried and undocumented. It's like a mash of strange options thrown together for Connected Drive.

Can someone confirm what functionality is available with regard to email and SMS? Both via BT and USB. Functionality being; view message, send message, or just message notification. Thanks.

PS - The dealer Encore specialist said that more messaging functionality will be available once iOS8 drops.

Answered my own question via another forum post. For anyone else curious about functionality of specific phones, here's the link

Even that page on the BMW site isn't really accurate.

"so strange how these functions are so buried and undocumented. It's like a mash of strange options thrown together for Connected Drive."

Yep, hit the nail on the head. The whole thing is just trial and error.
