Question for M Performance Owners

Just had some coding done to my car and the guy said he has not seen a car yet where the Internet feature actually works. I thought the car was tethering my phone over Bluetooth to access the internet. When we tested it by turning the phone off...the car was still able to access the internet. Let's be clear here, I'm not talking about the crappy BMW Apps, I mean sites like Google, Youtube...even F30Post, lol!

So the car must have it's own SIM. The guy coding (I told him I wouldn't share his name) said he thought I might have a Euro Spec Head Unit. I don't think so, but I just want to be sure that ALL the M Perf models have this type of Internet access.

Yes? No? Please respond.

Thanks,

LSB.

The dealer never mentioned anything about a subscription.

As I said, I turned my phone off, and it still worked. It is not using my phone.

So no one else has this? I find that hard to believe.

So what happens after three years? If it's Rogers can we roll it onto our mobile/iPad plan and share the data? I mean to be honest it's a bit of a gimmick and I suppose one can just as easily use their phone/iPad instead. Just wondering why anyone would pay for this?

My sales advisor told me about the inclusion of this feature as part of one of the packages which does expire after 3 years. I have no idea where the sim is located, but i do know it runs off of the 3G network which is extremely slow.

It was fun showing friends a coworkers the internet in my car, but that gets old real fast.

I suspect if you wish to continue to use it after 3 years you will have to pay bmw to keep using it.

Internet is part of the ConnectedDrive that all M Performance Edition cars have. It includes the following:

Emergency Call (10 years)
TeleService (10 years)
Remote Service (10 years)
BMW Online (3 years)
ARTTI (3 years)
Concierge (3 years)
Internet (1 year)

Also, my dealer was telling me that the internet service will work in the US as well without any charges. I've been told that after 1 year, my internet will stop working unless I arrange with BMW to pay to continue that service. I find it kinda gimmicky as navigation and typing is difficult. The touchpad does make it easier to type, but still not very easy.

Nah...to be honest on the day of delivery they had some 18 year old showing me the "tech" on the car, but he wasn't very convincing. I stopped listening half way through as I just wanted to get the car over to the shop and get the springs and wheels swapped out. I have a bit of OCD and I absolutely hated the way the car looked on the stock suspension. I know that I definitely did not sign anything other than the lease papers.

I signed an agreement with the services, normally you need to pay for them but they were included in our package.

You have option 6AR Internet which is part of the connected drive professional services package and this goes through BMW Assist.

If you're wondering where the SIM card is, it's inside the TCB (Telematics Communication Box) and that itself has an IMEI and SIM card number. Pre-NBT vehicles with CIC would use the Telematics combox and that is still being used on non-nav cars on the basic head unit since BMW Assist is now standard on almost every 2014 model.

Here's what the TCB looks like.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Telemati...-/221398886463

The TCB is standard on every 2014 Fxx car for Teleservices (Roadside Assistance and customer relations) but if you took that $850 option, you will also get internet, real time traffic information, remote services and smart phone connectivity as well as BMW Apps. For those of you with 2014 models who didn't take those options, like internet and remote services, it looks like it is possible to add them after delivery; not sure if it has been done before.

I was able to get mine working with the help of Vithy and Avgor from the coding forum.

My car is a 2012 model without BMW Assist and hence no onboard SIM card. Since my NBT head unit is retrofitted, I enabled the Bluetooth Data Transfer via coding and I can actually use my iPhone to connect to BMW Online and also use the Internet browser.

I'm still wondering if this can be done to a factory 2014 model without losing BMW Assist so if any of you guys don't have the BMW Connected Drive Professional package and are willing to try, let me know

How did you retrofit your 2012 to NBT? Can this be done to the 2013 F30 as well?

Yep it definitely can be done on a 2013 with or without navigation.

If you have CIC navigation, you can actually use the same 8.8" screen, iDrive controller and GPS Antenna. All you need is the NBT head unit, the activation module and you will also need to rewire the Bluetooth Mic, Bluetooth Antenna, Aux and USB port. You'll also need some coding done to get everything working like OEM.

I went for the touch controller that also required some additional rewiring but the original iDrive knob will work too.
