Port Installed Options - Keep Originals?
Anyone happen to know if I get something put on at port (grilles, cf mirrors etc) do I also get to keep the originals that I already paid for? $650 for mirrors isn't as bad if I can sell the the originals for $300, for instance. Thanks in advance!

No you don't. The price you are paying included installation and 4 year warranty
That being said, that's normally more than what you could resell the item for if you bought and installed from dealer

Only things I would consider as port install would be suspension, brakes, or LSD.. basically the $$$ things.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of selling the new stuff after I get rid of the car, just thought sell the original parts now. Plus chances are pretty good at lease end I'll just get a new version of the same thing. I could return the old one to stock and put the goodies on the new one or sell then if I get something else. All makes perfect sense. Thanks for the info!

How much are the grilles themselves? My sales guy just added them to my order (a little prematurely) so they'll be port installed for $230. Wondering if I should have him cancel that, and then just buy them separately and install myself. Not sure of the price difference though.
At the same time, going this route only adds like $3.60 to my monthly payments, so like $129 over the three year lease. Might be easier this way? |

Ok stupid question: what does port installed mean? When i contacted my dealer he did not offer different prices on stuff and added labour cost. What am i missing?

For port installed, you theoretically pay for the part and no labor. But the $230 grille example seems crazy. There are certain things that BMW will offer as options but won't do at factory. LSD, for instance, will probably all be installed at port since I don't see it as being a high-volume thing for them. All manufacturers do certain things like that at port. If you do later you have to pay your dealership labor rate.

If it's something easy like grilles they should do it no charge when prepping the car. LSD or something crazy maybe they'll work with you on labor. Mine is doing grilles, replacing reflectors, swapping turn signal bulbs and debadging, all little stuff, no charge.

I was planning a bulk negotiation. Want to change the kidneys, the manual shifter, handbrake and diffuser. Do you have pictures of what you are talking about for reflectors and turnsignal?

Check this thread, RAJ's white one has body colored reflectors instead of the bright orange:
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=954926 I ordered the grey ones for mine and had shipped straight to dealer. Turn signal bulbs I don't have a photo, but the one that is in there is amber. Stealth and Solaris both make one that is chrome when off and lights up amber. The fact that the reflector is no longer buried in the headlamp assembly makes going for "clear corners" MUCH easier. I posted the info about what bulb to order in that thread as well. |

Any thoughts on how difficult it is to install the black kidney grilles? I still have the option to cancel the port installation of them and buy them myself, but just want to get an idea of the relative ease.

YouTube is your friend when comes to installs. I learn most of my aftermarket install procedures through them. You can buy from GetBMWParts.com at very good discount, even with shipping they are far cheaper than BMW retail pricing. Right now they have promotions for $10, $20, and $30 off orders. You could buy the Black grills for $118 from them as an example.

Again, Youtube how to videos show the 4 bolts that need to be removed that allow you access to get you hand behind the grills to release the tabs. Looks simple enough, but doesn't everything about auto mechanics look easy on video?

Assuming it is that easy, and I fully expect that it is, why not just ask your dealer to swap them out when they prep your car for delivery? Should take them 5 minutes. Mine is already doing a bunch of little things for me no charge. Full Disclosure: service manager is a longtime patient of my father's, so not 100% sure they'd be doing 10 things for me for free otherwise. But swapping out grilles, which they know how to do and can do quickly, cannot possibly be that big a deal for them. They have to do a bunch of crap to the car anyway to unpack it, prep it, etc.
