F80/F82 Lithium Ion starter battery

Not much talk around about the F80 and F82 Lithium Ion battery used instead of the now regular AGM battery.

Interestingly the battery has built in electronic controls, so things like the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) is a thing of the past.

The battery plugs int the cars LIN BUS so the systems can monitor it.

50% weight saving over AGM

Thoughts ?

EDIT:
One major drawback is one cannot use regular car battery chargers, since they charge above 14V, which will damage the Li-Ion battery.
Hope dealer remember this when going in for a service and they hook up a charger for the diagnostics

Impressive. Like you say, with all the focus rightly on weight saving you think it would attract more press.

Weight saving is nice, curious about longevity and cost. E9x M3 batteries are already about $500 with the BS initializing fee tacked on. The new tech sounds very expensive, we'll see. Last thing I would want is a battery that only lasts 2 years and costs $800 to replace. Hopefully both of those points are exaggerations, and who knows, maybe will last longer.

Interesting. How will it behave in cold weather though?

Life is supposed to be better than AGM.
Sure cost will be high untill main stream models get it aswell

Interestingly BMW speak more about it being a superior power platform for the ever increasing electricity demands of modern cars than its small weight savings.

Sounds like a standard lead acid battery charger that wont work.

Only Li-Ion ones I know are industrial spec machines with specific software for them.

BMW have not confirmed yet which countries would get the Li-ion batteries.
It may be all or only just some.
So till deliveries start one cannot know if one needs a new charger or not.

The most important part of Lithium Ion batteries is the BMS (Battery Management system) that monitors each cell's state and give's accurate reports of the storage unit's actual capacity!

Compared to Lead batteries which have a nice curve depending on their charge status it is not same for Lithium Ion ones, also a curve used by most current lead charge controllers to replenish a flat battery!

We use Li Ion storage a lot here de to their higher life span (cycles) and efficiency (much much better than lead alternatives), yes you can use a normal lead battery charge controller as long as you are respecting the max cell voltage but then you start saturating the Lithium Ion battery and cause it to wear out fast/fail once it's full and keep pumping in current!

Good read on the subject:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/a..._ion_batteries

Though back to initial topic, good to see the use of Li-Ion battery in here, less weight, better lifetime, no real issues of wear when exposed to the same temperatures inside the engine bay as with Lead batteries.

i think the standard charger will work. again porsche went through this and there is no special charger for the Lithium batteries. i have had it in my gt3 for past 4 years. take it out in winter months in germany and put standard one in. it doesn't like temps below 40f. hellova lot lighter than regular battery but have no idea its in the car performance wise.

I hope they use the regular batteries for Canadian spec'ed cars. I don't mind saving weight but a slightly lighter car that doesn't start when you need it to is worse than a few extra pounds.

Many (most?) BMWs have their batteries in the trunk anyway and I'm sure the new M3 and M4 do.

BMW are specifically warning against standard chargers that charge at over 14V.
Dealers have to have their workshop chargers software upgraded to include Li-ion settings. The equipment currently charges AGM batteries at 14.8V. Most amateur chargers charge between 14V and 15V.

I see CTEK has a lithium ion specific charger in both USA and European forms that charges at 13.8V.

A lot of us got Braille Lithium batteries for our E90s to reduce weight. No real problems with the bigger ones for DD use.

And damn, BMW has still not hired E90fleet?!

Li ion is the future. Soon the majority of cars will be using these kinds of batteries. They are supposed to last longer and are lighter than common lead acid batteries. It's a good thing that BMW is starting to use these. I'd have liked to have seen them in the E90 M3's. I guess they weren't quite ready until now.

Cheers.
