Video in Motion - legality
Can anyone tell me if playing a movie on your iDrive screen is legal whilst driving in Toronto?
I had a look at the law and it seems to only apply to handheld devices but if a cop sees that a movie is playing on my iDrive screen, can I get a ticket for that? Can anyone shed some light into this?

seems illegal; see below From the MTO website:
The law makes it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices. The law also prohibits drivers from viewing display screens unrelated to the driving task, such as laptops or DVD players, while driving. The use of hands-free devices is still permitted, and drivers may use hand-held devices to call 9-1-1. |

The forum member who coded my car told me he got a $250-ish ticket for "distracted driving" having a movie playing on the screen as he pulled out of the parking lot he was in and onto the public roads (cop was right behind him). It was his passenger watching, but the cop said since it was "in view" of the driver it was a violation.
I still got it coded. I don't like the idea of big corporations telling me what I can and can't do. I used the functionality today while sitting in the car wash, but I don't use it on the road. LSB |

I haven't used it at all except on the highway on road trips when I have passengers in the car. It's pretty unlikely that any cop will see you playing a movie unless they're tailgating you.

You can PM Shawnsheridan and he can send you the link. It's not plug and play but it's not too difficult.

^ Thanks. Now the kicker question: does it void warranty? I just want the simple roll up windows and fold mirrors at lock functionality.

I don't think it will void the warranty. You're not doing anything to the car it can't already do and you're not disabling a safety device. You are setting yourself up to rear end someone so be really careful. Spiked insurance premiums are a clear reason to be cautious.
As for in cabin video, old news. Trucks used to have TV until insurance companies freaked. You can't tap someone with a 40 ton truck |
