The 335 at the track

Have any of you owners (with or without the oil cooler) tracked your 335 ?

I am curious as to how the car held up under the duress of the track, especially the oil temperature. I friend, who owns an M3, and frequently tracks his car at VIR claims that there are two or three 335s at every event and one or more of them always has problems completing the day, mostly because of oil temperature issues.

I didn't buy the 335 for the track but I plan to take it there sometime in the future - any feedback from those who have been there (the track) would be appreciated.

Regards

335 on track

I've had my 335 on the track. VIR full course and all three tracks at summit point. Never had a problem with oil temp. I do have the oil cooler. I'm not that fast though. There were two other 335's at the track last time I was there (Summit Point, Jefferson circuit) and there weren't any problems with oil temp. Two were in the novice run group (including me). One in the instructors. But it was October and the air temps were in the 70's.

I ran mine at the BMWCCA DE event at Road Atlanta in September. I was in the B group pushing the car pertty far to maintain speed with M3's, M coupes and modded this and that. It was great fun and the car behaved beautifully. It was fairly warm (high 80's) and the oil temp peaked at 270. The only complaints I have were the runflats and that I have to wait until next March for the next event.

I would recommend that everyone give their BMW (of any kind) a spin at a track or autocross event. It is really the only way to truely appreciate how well BMW's perform. I would also recommend that you put on non-RFT's and high performance brake pads.

Sorry for the newbie post but don't all 335's come with oil coolers as standard? I'm looking at buying an 08 335i Sedan (MT) with sports package shortly. Will it have the oil cooler?

Just to remind you that your insurance is null and void when your car is on a race track of any kind. Do it at your own risk! If you want to try out a BMW on a track and not risking your car, join a high performance driving school and use THEIR cars. I did that!

Using your own car in a discounted high performance driving school is also considered racing and thus no insurance coverage.

I had my car at a track for a day and did experience overheating on several occasions. The oil temp would go up to 300, and then the car would lose power (you can see more about this on other posts), at which point I would take it easy for a few laps until it cooled down. Mine does not have an oil cooler.

Other than that, the car performed great - the 335 is a blast on the track.

It was about 60 degrees on the day at the track, FYI.

I ran in the novice class at the PBOC event at Barber this past weekend - oil temp was in the 260-265 range. I have the oil cooler.

RFT tires were ok, but the left front took a beating - I'll be looking for non RFT to run at the track next time.

Brakes were great - standard pads were fine for me. If you're running in the advanced classes, HP pads might be a good upgrade.

The step was awesome - put it in DS and it was always in the right gear - gave me plenty of opportunity to aim for the right line....on occasion, I even hit the correct line (but not all that often)

Look in the tracking forum. Many of us have extensively tracked the 335i. I've logged nearly a dozen days on mine.

I started bone stock and now I'm running PROcede V2.02, race rubber, 17 inch wheels, H&R rear sway, hiflow cats, etc.

1 track day at California Speedway. The car was great! I ran in the "B" group and had no issues whatsoever. As far as I know, the 4 other e9x's in my group also had no overheating problems, although one member was complaining of soft brakes.

I found the 335i to be fast and very easy to drive well on the track. My oil temp reached a max of 280 at only one point in the day but never overheated.

One thing I noticed is that when I ran at higher RPM's the temperature went up. However I am not so sure that the lap times went down driving that way. Remember that boost and HP fall off significantly as you get close to red line so there is really no reason to have this car bouncing off the limiter.

RED FURY - better make sure your brake pads and tires are up to it. And remember...late apex...late apex...late apex. Also...easy through the kink until you know your car can take the movement. Flat footing it through the kink after a few sessions...I've seen a lot of mistakes and most of the time it stops with the tirewall.

Mine has been to Buttonwillow and California Speedway. For California Speedway my wife and I both ran the car and neither of us had any problems with overheating. I did take the extra precaution to open the hood whenever I had the chance but it ran beautifully all day!

That's probably part of the reason why I had lower oil temps at my last event, despite wringing the snot out of my car with V2.02.

Also, the higher average speeds with race rubber probably helped.

Regarding your comment that boost and HP fall off considerably, that is very true. What I found helpful was getting a proper dyno done and then mapping torque at each rpm range multiplied by gear ratio and rear end for each gear. That will get you torque to the ground and then you can determine the optimal shift points to maximize torque to the ground.

That got me a few more mph in the straights - kept the rpms lower - and kept the oil temps lower.

Heat soak at track events is a definite problem. With my old Audi S4s on the track..I could tell power was falling off when it got hot...I stayed about the same speed..since I sped up in the corners..but straight speed acceleration definitely fell off.

While that may be true, I was actually talking about power falling off at higher rpms on this car.

So....no need to redline it. In fact, you'll be slower if you do.

I'll beg to differ with you, halB.

"Using your own car in a discounted high performance driving school is also considered racing and thus no insurance coverage."

WRONG! After putting my car into a wall at Heartland Park (Topeka) October of '06, I was fully covered by American Family Ins.
I paid my $500 deductible, they picked up the total cost of the repair, ~9K!

They are afterall, high speed DRIVER EDUCATION events. (This is part of the reason that these events are so strict about making sure you're NOT racing--anyone else or even the clock.)

People may want to check with their own particular insurance company beforehand to double-check coverage. I did, and was told I'd be covered, which I was.

Two full days at Spring Mountain-no heating problems. The car is foregiving as it understeers a bit. The wide torque band also makes it easy and as people have noted, there is no need to redline it. The DSC comes on occasionally exiting corners, as I think the traction control is trying to deal with the lack of LSD. I ripped up the right front tire-on a clockwise course-and have replaced unspeakable RFTs with Goodyears and we'll see how much better it behaves at PIR in Dec.cuz baby's got a new set of shoes.
