*** PDF GUIDE - Modify OEM exhaust to sound like PE exhaust ***
I thought I'd post this up as a new thread so it's easy for people to find, as it's currently buried in the original one (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=739970), in post 1094, and the OP of that thread does not seem to visit much anymore to update his first post with this guide.
Cheers. . Last edited by Glowin; 03-04-2015 at 12:25 PM.. |

Bump for those who've missed this.
MODS - Can you insert my PDF into the first post of the original thread, so it's all in one place? I've linked it in my first post. |

Sounds great with the passenger side only too
Here's my update, finally, after finding a place who would do it!
I was having a hard time finding a shop who either wanted to do the mod (lots of them said it's a stupid idea) or didn't want to charge me like 7 hours of labor.... I found a muffler shop who would do it for $250. I only did the passenger side though, and it came out pretty good. And here's the logic I used as to why I only went pass side, besides not wanting to spend $400. If you look at the pics in the PDF guide I put together, you'll see the driver's side already isn't just a perforated pipe like the pass side. There's a canister of sorts, which has some sound insulating properties I'm guessing. But you know it's louder than just a perforated pipe, because A) the valving system is designed to up up that muffler for more noise, and B) it's already proven that putting more exhaust gases thru that side is louder - hence why everyone does the "golf tee" mod to it. This is what I found with just the pass side done. If I leave the driver's side valve as normal, most exhaust gases go thru the pass side, which now has a straight pipe. It's darn loud! Around 5000 to 5500 RPM on low throttle input (like a steady speed or very slow acceleration), you get some rasp / high pitched sounds. But if you accelerate quickly, it's a nice growl around that range as well, as the driver's side also opens up. If you leave the exhaust valve open always (golf tee mod), then some gas goes thru the driver's side always, and it mellows out the overall sound a little bit, but is still much louder than stock. I went with this setup in the end, but can easily go back to the louder setup anytime I want by just plugging back in the exhaust valve. |

Bump for new people discovering this great mod.
Out of curiosity, has anyone here had to go back to stock, or thought about how they'd do it? I'll most likely trade my car to the dealer, who I can't imagine will want it this loud. What have people done? Seems like a PITA to chop it off and trade it for stock. Plus, the car would sit for like a week until the other exhaust comes back... I was thinking I'd have to take it back to the shop, have them take off the exhaust, cut it back open again, and drill some holes in the solid piping to replicate the old perforated pipe. Or would that not do the trick? |

Anyway, I was considering doing this on the "driver's side only" the next time I have to drop the exhaust for whatever reason, but your findings make it seem like that would be less "worth it" in the end. Not interested in making the car any louder whatsoever UNLESS it's during those times that I choose to remotely open the valve on the drivers side from inside the cabin, hence my want to only do that one side. Looking for reviews from peeps that modded the driver's side only I guess... |
