What would you do?
Hi all,
New to this forum and happy to be here. I just purchased a 2011 335is and have been reading a lot about the tuning and mods. I want the car to be a daily driver, maintaining good gas mileage and all. But I also want to be able to call upon the beast when I feel the urge. So this leads me to my question for everyone. If you had this car and $1,000-$1,500, what would you do to achieve my goal and what results would you expect from those mods, i.e, horsepower, daily drivability, gas mileage, etc.? Thanks in advance. New Poster (Sam) |

If you search you will find lots of good info.
In a nutshell, I'd look for a used Cobb Accessport, vrsf downpipes, and vrsf intercooler. Then a ptf etune to top things off. Driveablity will not be affected - except you will go sideways a lot easier when step on it. Assuming 93 octane, depending on dyno you should be around 400whp. Gas mileage depends on how much more you put your foot into things. |

Thanks to you both! I have actually read quite a bit. The problem is that there is literally so much information that it's hard to decipher what the best path forward would be. That's why I ask for opinions like yours. I appreciate that you answered my other questions/concerns as well.
If I was to guess based on my own readings and pricing research, I would have went with N3m3sis' recommendation...JB4, intake, and downpipes. foghat, your way seems to be a bit more expensive if I am looking at the correct parts. I just don't know the end result of doing those 3 changes N3m3sis suggested...in terms of HP, drivability, gas mileage?!?! I'm guessing 90 HP, but not sure how much it changes the daily driving/gas mileage. N3m3sis, can you help? Also, do you all install a K&N air filter and Bosch sparkplugs as well? |

Im fbo now, with jb4 and the backend flash.
Last trip i made to south carolina from ohio i averaged 86mph and 28mpg As far as hp, im not 100%, things are going to differ between what dyno you are on. Alot of people here base their car on dyno number when they shouldnt be. Numbers mean nothing. Yeah numbers are awesome, but a dyno is a tool to ensure your car is running proper. |

do spark plugs for sure once you get a tune. Should be able to get a used cobb for about the same price as a new jb4.
Jb4 has some definite pros, but I just don't like the idea of tricking the dme. Plus, for me, my jb4 was not near as smooth as even the ots cobb maps. And no comparison to my ptf map (as would be expected). That said, jb4 has been around from the beginning and cars have been running them with no issues for years and 1000's of miles. Intake is great if you like the sound. Will not buy you much in the way of hp. Get the BMS dual cones if you want to go intake. You live in Florida, you are going to want an intercooler. An IC gives you consistent performance on back to back pulls. Otherwise you heatsoak and dme pulls timing and you lose power until things cool down again. You are going to be at about the same hp numbers with N3m3sis' route. For the first pull anyways.... You should be well within $1500 with my recommendations. Probably can even get ic and dp installed at that price. Last edited by foghat; 04-29-2014 at 01:45 PM.. |

I went with:
* VRSF Intercooler 7" for more efficient cooling which is important to avoid overheating. Also got the upgraded charge pipe at the same time for my -07 coupe. * aFe Dual Cone Intake. Should hopefully increase the airflow a bit. I like how you can hear it sucking in air into the engine * COBB v3 with an e-tune from PTF (Nishan was great working with) and after this the car runs smoothly and feels powerful. I was not aiming at getting maximum power but instead keeping it somewhat within safety margins. Nishan estimated the car now gives 380-390 HP (haven't benched it) which is enough for me. |
