228i loud buzzing noise on cold start?

So I'm noticing when I first start the car after it has sat for a while it makes a loud buzzing noise. The noise stays as the car warms up but gets quieter.

Is that a normal sound for this engine (228i)? I dont remember hearing that noise when I test drove one (not the one I currently own) but maybe I just didnt notice.

Well, there's the clatter from the DFI , but no buzzing noise from my 228. Where does it sound like it's coming from ?

This does NOT sound like clatter, that I'm familiar with.

I need to open the hood and try and sort that out. I always notice it in the morning when I need to go to work so I havent had a chance to dig into it much yet.

I noticed something like that a few mornings ago, actually. Sounded sort of like an accessory whirring. Didn't have time to investigate and haven't noticed it since (been taking the bike to work).

I'll listen more closely the next time I take the car to work.

I'm assuming the pump would be in the tank and this sounds like it is in the engine bay, and way louder than any fuel pump I've heard.

It almost sounds like the fan or belt or something similar is buzzing. But I'll have to wait til I can start it up w/ the hood open to try and narrow that down.

It wasn't so pronounced this morning, but it seemed like it could be coming from the AC compressor. I'll keep my ear open for it, but I'm not too worried.

Also, these cars (all of them) need to stay in park till warmed for several minutes. it's not good to just jump in first thing from a cold start and put it in R or D in less than 15 seconds let alone 1 minute. Wait 2-3 minutes before driving when cold start/first start of the day. Never apply over 50% throttle till fully warm. Always let it idle and cool off after brisk to hard driving before shut down, for at least 2-3 minutes. Turbo charged vehicles require proper start and shut down like this for turbocharger life to say the least. It's also to let transmssion fluid and oil get to a reasonable temp for proper/optimum break-in and regular drivability, less engine/valve & component ware.
I agree with you 100% but how the hell are we supposed to know when the car is fully warm. I use about 10-15 minutes.. BMW.

While I totally agree about not getting on the throttle until properly warmed, I very much disagree with sitting and idling your car to achieve that. The best way to properly warm up an engine is to drive it conservatively. Idling doesn't generate the heat or movement necessary to do the job. Just start the car, wait 10-15 seconds for the revs to start dropping, then drive away. That instruction has been in at least BMW's owner's manuals for 20 years or more.

I noticed the small whirring sound as well. My AC was off and only the engine is running during cold start. Anyone know why it has that weird noise?
