F31 delivery Friday!! Should I run her in....

Finally getting my AW F31 MSport Friday!!!!!! BUT do I run her in???? Seen lots on this subject but no real 'definitive' guide. I even heard that a dealer had said there was no need...? Question I have is only to do with engine / drivetrain (understand about scrubbing tyres in etc).
What I want to know is: IF I drive it hard from day 1, how possibly could this either damage the engine, or affect future performance?

Get ready for a shitfight!

In my opioion the only thing you need to "run in" are the brake pads.

For the motor all I have ever done with my newer cars and bikes is ensure the oil, or water in the bikes, is up to temp before giving some welly.

It does give guidance on running in.

I've previously bought a couple of ex demo cars from BMW and you can guarantee they weren't run in by the book, lots of boy racers just wanting to try them out.

I've never had any problems with those cars either losing performance, breaking down or seemingly suffering any general problems at all.

So if you want to give it the beans from day one then do so. I will run mine in though despite everything I've said above because it's my nature to follow the rules

Here we go again.

At end of day it's your car you can do what you want.

You spend 30 k + on a car! then take your chances on how you want to treat it.

However, in my opinion, yes you need to run it in.

The reason you run brakes in, is to let them bed in.

The same is true for half a ton of various other components in your car, not just the engine.

The main thing is driving sensibly, even when run in, give the car enough time to get oil circulating etc.

Also, if you came to buy a second hand car, would you buy the one run in or the one driven hard from start?

As said your choice.

There is a definitive guide, its in plain black and white in the owners handbook!!!!
Cant remember the exact figures but dont take it above something like 3000rpm until the car has done 1200 miles. Ignore it if you like, but BMW obviously recommend it for a reason.

Page 168 in the American manual for F31.

http://cache.bmwusa.com/pdf_e783c5fc...1-7ad074eab3f9

There is also need to run in the tyres for 200 miles, clutch for 300 miles.

If you do not let clutch bed in, you do run a high risk of juddering with gears.

The engine allows you 3500 rpm and 93 mph (for diesel).

Can't see why you would need to exceed most of that day to day driving tbh.
Especially in an auto diesel.

How would you know if it had been run in or not if you bought a second hand car?

I'm no car expert or mechanic so just interested in what to look for as our second car is almost always a second hand one.

You would not know if it had or not.

It was obviously a hypothetical question.

On looking at 2nd hand cars, huge list of things to check but again even then it's your choice, take what the salesman says, have a look a round yourself, have AA/RAC do it.

So hypothetically, what car would you buy, one that had been run in or one thrashed from day one?

Sorry, didn't seem like a hypothetical question.

The answer I'd want to give is that I would always take the car that had been run in, but clearly I haven't as I said, had a couple of ex demos which were no doubt thrashed for first 3k miles before I got them.

Clearly it's up to the OP but I know I'll be running mine in by the book, when it bloody arrives.

My F30 will be a company car so in theory, I can thrash it from day one...but I won't. It's still my "baby" for the next 4 years and while I won't pay for any costs associated with any repairs required, it's still a ballache so why take the risk?

Just took it easy until 1000 miles, no launch or sport+ kept under 4000 rpm, always waited for the oil to heat before giving it throttle.

That's it!

I only tried it for the first time on Friday and mines done 3300 miles. Took me ages to get it into the LC mode - and I find it helps if you take the handbrake off.

So yeah just tried the launch control 1100 miles in car was nice and warm, went in straight away!

Opinion:

Holy S**t Balls - It moved off the line so quick i think my internal organs were left in a different postcode, and I swear i saw the trees sway as i shifted the earth a little under me, I think everyone just lost 0.022 secs of their day today!

Just wait until you try it in reverse gear, now that will be scary
