a/c always on when starting the vehicle

i noticed that every time i switch the start button on the a/c automatically turns on despite it being off from last use... anyone experienced this? it seems to happen when coming back to the car after about 15 mins have passed.

Normal. This default coding of the system. If it really bothers you get the car coded to have it remember the last setting.

Well, it not really hacking, more of changing the internal BMW coding already there. The features coded on a car are created for by destination market. Different features are turned on/off by location.

feel like hacking makes it sound more serious than it is. I've known dealer that recommends and sends customer to third party for coding. Only reason dealer can't do it themselves is because BMW NA doesn't allow them to.

My A/C came on automatically for about a week, now (I feel) it has learned my driver profile and does not come on any longer with my main key. I tested with the other key and the A/C was turned on automatically... turned car off with A/C on... stepped away for maybe 3 min and tried the main key. The A/C did not come on.

Notes that may make a difference:
I am the only driver of my M235
I set the driver profile in iDrive

Nope, just changed it to my name.

So, I just went and messed with it. I entered car with extra key. Everything changed to like the first time I sat in the car( ac on, seat waaaay back, side view mirrors all wonky ect...).

Went to driver profiles, the default was on (-----) I switched it to (John) and everything went to my settings. ( seat changed, mirrors changed and ac turned off, radio went to my station ect).

So I believe, set a profile with a name and you'll be golden. You can do 3 and a guest I think.

Why wouldn't you have AC on as default?
Convenience and reliability against a very very small increase in fuel consumption.

Air conditioning seals dry out and leak if AC is not used regularly.

Q I know when I'll need AC amd I can turn it on by myself
A That's great, but it's like having the convenience of auto wipers, lights, rear mirror etc. Let's you concentrate on the important stuff.

Q Do you turn in AC in winter??
A Of course, stops the windows misting up. It's not just to keep cool.

Q My 9 year old e90 always have AC off and i never had a problem with leaks etc
A That's great, my healthy grandad is a 110 and smoked 40 cigarettes a day since he was 2.

Quote from Honest John website
With a standard manually controlled a/c system you should leave the a/c on all the time, even if not using it to cool the car. You should also turn the system to full cold for ten minutes once a week – even through the winter if you can – in order to circulate refrigerant which contains lubricants for the system and its seals. Then switch to full heat through the same pipes to thoroughly dry them out. This gets rid of any moisture in the ventilation trunking where mould and bacteria might be accumulating.

Climate control systems, where the temperature is set by the operator should be left on all the time, as the a/c will be required to fine tune a reduction in temperature. The vehicle will decide for itself whether to engage the compressor or open the outside flaps and let in the outside air, which at 0 - 3c Celsius will have no moisture content anyway. "

Well, I will keep an eye out again to make sure, but I noticed yesterday that when I got in my 228i my AC was not on and I had to turn it on. The previous day I had turned off the entire system (i.e. no fan at all). Yesterday I had to turn on the AC and the fan to get it going again. Maybe that is your ticket if you absolutely want it to default to off, make sure you shut the fan to off as well. I prefer it to be on all the time. The only reason I turned it off before was I was sitting in the car running off the battery messing with iDrive and did not need the system to be running.
