Mark in paint returned!

I had a few large marks on my roof that almost looked like bird poop had damaged the paint before it was sealed, that's the kind of shape and size anyway, they were polished out by BMW but a month later they're back!!

I emailed them and I've got to return it again so they can asses it, I can only assume there's some kind of problem with the paint or undercoat, the marks are about 75mm in diameter near the edge of the roof either side so can easily be seen.

I'm guessing the roof will need painting, but what the heck is causing the marks to return? The roof looked almost perfect after they machine polished it but now it's just as bad as before!!

My main concern if they paint it is will the colour match? I've seen a few posts where BMW have painted bits that haven't matched the rest of the car, but as its the whole roof maybe it won't notice? The plastic bits either side of the roof are clearly darker than the rest of the car anyway, I'm starting to wish I bought a Ford!

Have you got some pics?

A roof shouldn't be as much an issue with the colour matching.

This is what happened to my Golf GTI's 3/4 panels after they painted it after an accident. It is some sort of reaction. In fact the plastic bits should be the same colour as the rest of the roof. Therefore, it seems to me that the roof might already have been painted post factory before delivery to you.

Have you owned the car from new?

It looked like someone has burnt through the paint by over-polishing, but this doesn't make much sense if the car was polished and looked ok before.

Apart from my front bumper (to be fixed), all the plastic bits match perfectly.

Yes I had the car built, I've only had it over a month and didn't notice the marks when I picked it up, after a weeks I noticed them and got them polished out, now I just noticed they are back, I've hardly even driven it and it lives in a garage most of the time.

I'm sure people have mentioned the fact the plastic parts are a slightly different colour, its very noticeable on MR which is one of the reasons I didn't get that colour, the bumpers look different for sure, someone said it was due to the undercoat being a different colour if I remember correctly

There is a Melbourne Red F30 320i parked around the corner from my house. All the plastic parts match perfectly. It is a strange colour as it does not look metallic and is a very strange red with a brown tinge.

Something has clearly gone very wrong with the paint.

I would be somewhat worried about the rest of the car - you certainly don't want to be respraying other parts on a new car.

Mine are perfect. That's why I am having my front bumper re-sprayed.

Think its only the roof, I've had a good look over the rest of the car, I was wondering if something like hydraulic fluid could have dripped on the roof when it was on the transporter or something?

Looks like burnt in corrosive effect of bird poop. You can get it out with farecla scratch remover though be careful not to take too much clear coat off. Then wax it with one with a slight filler in it such as autoglym ultra deep shine and you'll be good to go - happens on my f10 with flies on the bonnet too. It's modern water based paint....

Good luck, though sounds as if the dealer will deal with it...

BMW already removed the mark and waxed it, but it returned to the same place, I'm getting it looked at Saturday so we will see what BS they try to sell me this time

Wet sand and a good compound will sort that. Its just acid etch from brids by the looks of it.

Don't take it to BMW, call a proper detailer, it'll be around £100 to sort.

I had the same problem, I had Ridgeway sprays redo my bonnet and it came back in perfect condition. BMW had done all this without an attempt to argue the point. Good luck mate.

Garage List
I had this issue on a car. Body shop claimed it was caused by trapped condensation, and they polished it out but it returned. I got rid of the car...

Just have it wet sanded yourself for £100. It'd be a lot less hassle.

People are far too quick to demand paint.

All BMW will do it polish and wax it, which will hide it till the wax comes off and then it'll be back as you'll need to take a fair bit of the clear coat off.

It is so annoying especially for such a young car. They need to remove the clear coat and get to the base paint.

I may just ask for some money off the finance as I doubt I'll be keeping the car any longer than I have to, can't say I'm very impressed with the quality of BMW, probably be going back to £3000 bangers after this unless Audi are any better?
