I from my understanding was that BMW would only add the additional WiFi antenna on cars that opted for CarPlay early on. If you purchased it used or had CarPlay coded on without adding that antenna you’d have an experience similar to what you have where the signal range seems really small.
I only say used as the previous owner could have had it coded on without the extra work on the antenna.

That's not true, I had my carplay and antenna from the factory and I have this issue on my iPhone X.
