Update iDrive

Hi,

i just checked for updates to my car on www.bmw.com/update

-entered my VIN
-got an update link
-downloaded
-copied to USB
-put USB in car
-went to iDrive settings -> Software Update
-car responds the software is incompatible

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any solutions?

That's a legacy website. It spits out old iDrive software and isn't compatible with iDrive 6.

So why does it show an update after you put in the VIN No? And how do we update the new Idrive?

Update through dealer. Full istep upgrade of car.

I have no idea. Possibly the database behind that legacy site only has old VINs and any new VINs incorrectly get assigned the latest version it has. Pure speculation as only BMW can answer this.

My dealer said that the firmware was updated automatically 'over the air' from the connected drive... is this true?

He said it was updated about twice a year....

I haven't seen any BMW literature talking about over the air software updates. I thought they only do OTA map updates and Connected Drive Service updates.

That said, I really hope they'll start doing it soon as long as they don't screw it up. Connected Drive updates are a good indication of BMW software division's capabilities

But I managed to update the maps tonight to 2018-01, available on BMW website... massive file ... 29GB for Europe maps.

Just another quick question, I can play .MKV movies from the USB but how do I pause and skip? any ideas...

If I'm not mistaken, you could do that by pressing the button next to CD/DVD player.

If you keep it pressed, it should fast forward instead of moving to next track.

Mine's a November build and that's how it came from the factory. On my E 91 I updated the telephone and multimedia software several times until they stopped offering upgrades. Note that it's not I drive software that is upgraded only telephone and multimedia features. Mainly used to ensure compatibility with newer phones.

+1 I had the same issue last night, shows usb device file is incompatible with idrive. dec 2017 release. maybe not current with 2018 vin, and working on it.

That site was used to update device driver files to ensure the cars could connect new devices. Don't think the same applies anymore to the same extent it used to be. Either way, that site never updated iDrive functionality as such.

You could update the connected drive services from the iDrive itself.

It simply means your iDrive firmware is up to date and no upgrade is necessary/available at this time.

Chalk this up to poor error handling in part of BMW.

That's actually not what's happening. That website used to deal with device driver file updates prior to iDrive 6. Just a completely different website that's not been updated.

Where from exactly did you download the map update?

Also I wonder If I can add Europe's map if I have North America's now.

There's a specific piece of software that handles the USB map updates called download manager. Get it from the connected drive portal.
I think however that you are restricted to one area download. In the uk it's Europe only
