Check inner tire wear!
I had one of my Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric run flats 245/35/20 (front) on my m550 delaminate along the inside edge. At first, I couldn't figure out how that would happen- There's a slash about 6"-8" long and figured maybe it was some very motivated vandalism. A quick forum search and I see this has been a known problem for years across a few different tire brands, sizes and make of car they're fitted on.
Just wanted to put out a reminder to those of you running Goodyear run flats to carefully check that inside edge! It's hard to see, but you can definitely feel a scalloped edge where the tread meets the sidewall, and this will eventually lead to a delamination/blowout. I'm replacing the run flats with a staggered set of Michelin pilot super sports, and hopefully those will be better all around. |

Was this on the front or the rear? And unless you hate runflats for some reason, Michelin makes great high performance runflats called Pilot Sport A/S 3+, although not sure they are available in your exact size. I will be putting a set on my Corvette Z06 this spring and I will be searching for some for my Goodyears when they wear out.--Bob

Not uncommon for that POS tire. Do yourself a favor and remove all of them from your car and replace with Michelin Pilot Sport 3ZP.

The section of shoulder where delamination hasn't taken place, is indicating tires have been run with low pressures for a good few miles. The type of failure is not peculiar to the Goodyear RFTs.

Same on my last BMW, recommended front pressure was far too low to prevent poor shoulder wear. Rear needed a minimum of 0.15 bar (2 - 3psi) increase on setting pressure, to help the inner wear, with the camber and toe we have on the geometry. |

The affected tire was front passenger. I've heard of this same thing happening on the rears as well.
I've been wanting to swap out these Goodyear run flats for about as long as I've had the car. I've had plenty of problems with them and have lost count of how many I've replaced since I took delivery October 2017. I'm looking forward to see if there's merit to the hype around switching to the non-run flat Michelin pss. I put a lot of miles on this car (creeping up on 40k) and I still love it as much as the day I got it- aside from the tires, it's been pretty much rock solid and trouble free. |

Agree in general, but this Goodyear F1 is an engineering disaster. The worst sidewall structure and failures for no good reason. Goodyear should either redesign, discontinue or recall this POS.

Here's a crazy thing... I went and test drove a new 2020 Porsche 911 the other day. Guess what the factory tires were??? Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric Runflats!?!? No shit - Couldn't believe my eyes.

I'm surprised the US market views the Goodyear Eagle F1 so badly. It is a tyre of choice for many performance vehicles over here in the UK. Rated as one of the best run-flat tires as well.

The Pirelli have been stellar by comparison. Still on the car 2 years later and no problems. Luckily my 2019 came with Michelin PS 3ZP and those are even better. Quieter, better ride, etc. My dealer steers customers away from the Eagle F1 Assy 3 when people need tires. They tell me they've had lots of complaints about that tire. Mostly sidewall related failures. I've heard OEMs vendor approve a few tires for most models (except specialty models such as the M cars) to keep the flow of tires to the factory so production isn't held up. My guess is Goodyear gives best pricing and delivery so they're used by OEMs.

I actually like the tires, when they are functional as tires... But I've had to replace 4 tires and 1 wheel in 20 months. They just have severe sidewall issues. I would have switched to Michelin by now, but I have tire & wheel insurance and keep getting no-cost replacement tires and wheel.

I've put a few hundred miles on my new set of Michelin super sports and it's night and day compared to the Goodyear set.
The ride is much quieter and smoother and they don't lose traction as easily as the Goodyear runflats. I'd say they Goodyear eagle f1 runflat is a mediocre tire at best. The serious reliability issues have put them on my blacklist- never again! |
