It's a problem with all direct injection engines. The S63 isn't immune and you have to lower the engine to clean the carbon build up off the valves.
Moving to an oil that doesn't get used up in the engine, like you did, is very smart in my opinion. You are minimizing the carbon build up on the valves is my hypothesis.

I've go the build up problem on my 2013 Tiguan. It's very common on the VWs. The remedy is some kind of walnut blasting.

CBU on valves is SAPS (Sulfated Ash and Phosphorus). It is byproduct due to additive and base stock composition and ends up on valves through evaporation loss. Oil with lower Noack (evaporation loss) is better for DI engines. But that doesn't mean engine will use less of that oil. However, primary way to lower CBU is lower SAPS oil. LL04 is low SAPS oil, LL17FE LL01 and LL01 FE are high SAPS oils. Lubrizol, one of the main additives suppliers, did test on VW EA888 engine and high SAPS oil left 167% more CBU compared to low SAPS. BMW in Europe uses LL04 oils in all engines since 2009. In the US BMW was sticking to LL01 due to high sulfur in gas until 2017. |

Switched my 2019 540i to Liqui Moly 5W40 Leichtlauf High Tech last week. Made a 650 mile road trip over the weekend during which my average speed was 67.2 mph and fuel consumption was 33.2 mpg. The vehicle ran as smooth as ever and I certainly didn't notice any drop in fuel economy. I'm planning to stick with this oil and change it every 7,500 miles.

For my 2018 M550i, the owner's manual says 0w-20 or 0w-30 in LL-01FE or LL-14+ FE. Yay. I'm under factory warranty for a little bit longer than CPO so I need to stay with factory spec oil (I'd be the one BMW would single out for not using their oil).

LL01 and LL04 are minimum HTHS 3.5cP. Therefore, not as fuel efficient, but offer more protection. |

I literally just got back from BPG for an oil change! Andy is a good guy and an enthusiast. Yup, he turned me on the 5W-40, I trust him. Never need to add between changes like with the thin stuff. They also did all my Dinan stuff.

What boost/bhp increase qualifies as a tuned B58? I have the pre-LCI 540i with 335bhp and a Dinan elite tune adding 40ish hp. So it’s tuned but running about the same as a factory M340i engine which isn’t considered tuned. I’m getting ready for another oil service in a month and want to ask the indy shop what they plan to use.

So the manual for my 2019 540i lists both LL-01FE (0W-30 per BMW parts, 5W-30 per LiquiMoly) and LL-14FE+ as suitable engine oil types. And yet on every one of my oil services performed by the dealer I bought the car from, they used 83-21-2-463-674 BMW GROUP LL-17 FE+ or the replacement 83-21-5-A42-D32 BMW GROUP LL-17 FE+ (0W-20). Seems odd the dealer service dept is not using what the manual recommends unless they are going by internal service bulletin that states different oil.
