G30 AC ... is this a problem area?
I’ve been on the G30 forums for well over 5 years. Never heard of the AC being weak, ever. Except some new G60 owners now saying the G30 AC was passable at best. Mine is a 2019 pre-LCI owned from new when I ordered it in fall 2018 and never had any issues with the AC in our southern summers….constantly 90F and high humidity. Am I missing something?

I complain about it every so often compared to my W204 Mercedes the G30 replaced. My wife just says I am spoiled and the AC is more than fine.

A/C in office buildings etc. in Germany is also much weaker, and in many parts we don't even have A/C here as most people don't find it necessary. |

I thought it was weak too (and I live in the hottest and most humid of places you can think of) but then I found a setting in iDrive that mimics the hot/cold dial old BMWs had. It's called upper body temperature or something like that. Turned that to cold a few notches and now it's perfect.

There were some issues, mostly software related in the 2017 model year. People complained the AC could not keep up on a hot day. I believe all the cars got an update by 2018 and was fine from then on.
You can search for the threads on the issue. I have a 2018 M550iX and never noticed any issues in 95+F degree days. |

Early G30's like mine had a stupid big piece of moulded foam in the ducting for the center vents which restricted their flow. Once that was removed and I had my software updated, my aircon has been perfectly acceptable even during summer heat here in Western Australia where it'll often go into mid 40's (around 110-120deg F to most of you folk).
I've noticed on hot days the thermo fans will run absolutely flat out (loudly) keeping up so I suspect the system is probably pushing its limit, but sof ar its always managed to get the cabin cooled reasonably quickly and maintained it well. Pity the ventilated seats are crap and don't utilise the cooled air! |

Sometimes I have to turn it on max AC to get it cold and then turn it back down but that’s it. On my 2018 540 I did have to have a compressor or something replaced. Done under warranty.

I’d describe it as adequate
I’ve certainly ky had better systems in previous cars not just bmw My 2017 540 I found slow to start and ramp up fan speed on a hot day, a software upgrade ( for an unrelated item) improved matters My 2023 550 is fine As you will find in other threads, key is making sure you have the controls set accordingly ie as regards the fave vent temperature which is co trolled separately within idrive and understanding what the fan speed control does (sets maximum possible fan speed not necessarily actual fan speed) Get it serviced every 2-3 years to make sure it’s in tip top form |

Apart from software update, there's also this fix with removing insulation which is also included in bmw service bulletin -

I use the Max AC button pretty frequently in the summer but I’m also a little impatient. After a few minutes I hit the auto button again. I don’t really find that objectionable.

Maybe they’ve made assumptions about face level temperature in the software ie cold when outside temp hit and warm if not, something like that. The vents are hidden in this car so maybe they are also looking for a draight free environment? Either way not having that choice seems a backward step. |

I do find the A/C in my car can be inadequate and take longer than it should to cool after startup. It’s not terrible, but noticeable enough to wonder if there is something wrong. After driving for a while, it seems just fine.

I really miss the wheel, it was so much quicker. Maybe it's also a voice-activated adjustment |

I miss that wheel that was a staple of BMW's, it was just so convenient to be able to adjust cool air and warm air coming at you on the fly. I'll have to look around iDrive climate settings for the digital version of it. I honestly don't mess with climate settings much, I leave it on Auto and turn the temperature dial. I keep them on sync at all times.
I rarely get in my car when it's been baking in the sun, so even on a hot day, it's coming out of my air conditioned garage. But I do tend to drive it on summer Fridays to work where it can sit in the sun. I would agree, it is adequate and gets the job done eventually and maybe not as quick as some of the other cars I have had. I also find that I need to keep the temp at 65 or so to be comfortable on hot days, which seems low and doesn't feel 65. On the Max button, I',m pretty sure all this button does is crank up the blowers to Super Max. I think it causes the air to blow out too quickly before it is completely chilled, so I question how much of a difference it makes trying to cool down a hot cabin on Max vs. normal high blow. I have tested it on my E39 with a thermometer. The air is cooler by 10 degrees coming out of the vents on normal high fan setting vs. cyclone Max setting. Plus on my E39, it so friggin loud on Max, it's annoying. I honestly have never hit the Max button on the G30. Now if only ventilated seats actually ventilated like they are supposed to, or better yet, used the AC in reverse (blowing vs. sucking) like other cars do, that would be "cool".

Right, makes sense why Max is so much hotter. It's using cabin air that is well over 100F in a lot of cases and trying to cool it, instead of pulling in the 80F air from outside.
