M5 F90 turbo inlets for M550i

Would turbo inlets from F90 fit 2023 M550i?

Can’t find any good ones designed specifically for N63TU3, but S63 seems to have a huge selection on the market…

Hey bud...

I'm not exactly sure what's going on here? Were those custom-made turbo inlets or did the owner of the m850 get the F90 (S63) ones to fit somehow?

Not many people leave the engine cover on in the summer. In the m850 in that pic, I can't really see what's going on because they have the engine cover on.

Thanks for any insight!

Do you know what the difference is between the n63tu3 and s63tu4 inlets?

doesn't the newest G30 basically have the M5 engine rather than the usual M550i version? S vs. N...

No.
The S63 block starts out as an N63. N63 share the rods and throttle body with the M5. Other than that, all different part numbers.

I do not. They're different part numbers though. When I asked Dinan about their F90 turbo inlets, they said that they wouldn't work on an m550.

Looks like the metal bracket has to be removed. But the Dinan Turbo inlets only have one spot for a sensor and there's two sensors on the right side a (tiny one).

Is there a bypass for that small sensor somehow?

The turbo inlets are carbon fiber so I can't imagine you can tap into it?

I'm going to have to stick to my original post. That there is NO option for Turbo inlets for the N63TU3 motor.

The M850 with the Dinan F90 turbo inlets probably had issues. I'm assuming he got a check engine light, did a smoke test and the inlets were leaking. Also the Dinan F90 inlets don't have a spot for the temperature sensor that the M550/M850 have. F90's don't have a temperature sensor in their turbo unlets.

I would like to be proved wrong, but so far haven't.

That's sad. If somebody starts selling carbon fiber turbo inlets and engine cover for my N63TU3 it would cost me a lot of money, real fast.

No issues so far, car is daily driven….

I was going to reply to your PM directly but figured it’d make more sense posting here incase anyone needed info for further development.

Need to do a significant amount of modification. The breather valves need to be relocated, need an F90 oil filler neck, the right side intercooler pipe needs to be extended about an inch. The right side bracket on the alternator that holds the coolant line for the turbos needs to be cut so you can shift the line a little more to the center.

After all said and done, the intercooler pipe become a little restrictive due to the amount they need to bend to go over the inlets.

Best bet is to start off with Eventuri inlets, they move a lot less volume than Dinan, but they’re far smaller in girth, which should make the fit a little easier for the intercooler pipes to go over without being squished.

The biggest obstacle is getting enough clearance for the right turbo outlet. Best approach would be to source some “s” shape silicone tubes that turn up then to the center of the block so they run in the middle, similar to the F9x intercooler piping.

Another note:

Reason for the lack of clearance to the IC piping is because you can’t clock the inlets low enough. On bank 2 you can once you re-route some of the wiring and coolant hoses, which I did, with intent that I’ll be relocating the expansion tank to the front as well.

Bank 1, evem once you move some of the wires and connectors out of the way, and swap the Oil Filler neck to the F90 one, you end up with having the actual intercooler obstructing the path for the inlet to sit lower (another reason why the Eventuri might be better, or simply cut the Dinan ones shorter.)

Interesting observation brought me to realize that the N IC’s are actually install sideways, meaning they’re longer along the face of the head. The S63 IC’s are installed sideways, that’s why you’ll notice the coolant fittings are located on the sides of the S63 IC’s, and the N63’s have them at the front.

Honestly there’s a ton of variables that made MY experience a lot more complex, let alone the fact that it was purely motivated by M550bernina ‘s pessimism at 1AM 😂

First I would like to say thank you. Secondly, I know you're a professional and would not be able to resist if something could actually be done. My pessimism was intentional as I really wanted to hear back from you.

It's good to know that this can work, after reading your post it's definitely a bit out of my league. I really wanted inlets just help my turbos breathe. And now your post is out there, so anybody else who wants to venture and try this as your insight.

Thanks again!

Haha, I was actually referring to your earlier “No.” reply as the motivation, prior to my attempt at starting the job. 😂

If you want to approach something a little less complex, but still a vast improvement over the originals, consider the OEM F90 inlets. From my earlier quick attempt, the clearance is there, you just need to shave the little notch (cross compatibility lock) to clip them onto the turbos.

Besides, they’re plastic , which makes it so much easier to modify accordingly.

Nice. Hahaha. I think half of the custom stuff done to our cars are driven by motivation!

I look into the F90 OEM ones as it does sound much less complex. Thanks again!

Just a quick comparison shot in how pathetic the stock inlets are. Another clear example of how the N63tu3 is just a sabotaged version of the S63. One thing I can’t figure out tho is who got fired for approving the B-Series ignition system for it. 😂

Woah, it's possible to relocate the expansion tank to the front on the N63TU3? Do you have any reference on how to do that? That would greatly improve serviceability and eliminate the danger of a cracked tank leaking onto the injectors.

Should be doing it soon so I’ll document it. As far as I could tell, the only thing that’s required is an extension on the coolant feed line, the return lines come from the front so they will either need to be shortened or re-routed to avoid any line kinks.

I had the customer order an aluminum version of the 540i expansion tank for direct installation with assurances for zero chance in tank failure.
