Hulkenberg has been DSQ and lost his 13th place because his Kick Sauber's floor plank was worn away below the 9mm limit and RUS has avoided a penalty for a malfunctioning DRS when the Merc brake-by-wire failed so the Brit keeps his second place.

Yes, 20 years ago and 30 years ago for a Championship. I would not put my money on them for the next couple years.

I saw your post at 04:30 AM this morning , so I had the necessary time at the company to figure out what my answer would be .

Honda , the Japanese and Newey would love to get MAX at Aston.
The 2026 Honda PU will deliver very strong power , that's for sure .
But the question is, can Newey design a new Aston aero bullet with a new 'active aero WDC package in 2026.
That's not sure yet..

The 2026 active aero will get 'movable front and rear wings to make the racing more exciting. The front wing will be 100mm narrower and has a two-element flap. The rear wing is also three-element, with the lower beam wing removed.
This active wings be the X-mode en Z-mode in combination with a man. overdrive button .
The DRS wing will be gone ...
On the other hand , MAX can get a $Billion Aston contract from Stroll.
And that's jaw dropping money . But as MAX said : I will never race for the money (!)

We can bet on it (!) The 2026 Mercedes PU will be a power beast...
Aero wise is Mercedes always in the top 3 at the grid and in this season is Mercedes the 2nd fastest car at the grid.
This means Mercedes has at this moment the best foundation to build the best new 2026 car .
The 2026 Mercedes PU and the Benz power surge will destroy the rest of the field ...

So, my answer is without a doubt : Mercedes (!)
MAX will be the 2026 Mercedes #1 driver and with car number 1.

Wolff is fishing for 2 years after MAX to get him at Mercedes.
And Wolff is very good friends with MAX and Jos ..
