I've tried "double-clutching" and even rev matching to pop into 1st, no luck.

Throwing the shifter into 1st at 20mph, as in downshift? It doesn't even allow me to enter the gate of 1st unless I'm below 5mph.

When does the car actually stall out in second? I can leave it in 2nd and the car can roll at idle about 7-8mph. I assuming if you encounter a hill then its a possibility? But how can I shift to 1st if it feels like something blocking it? Or will the car let me if It feels like stalling? I'm not too worry about the jerk from shifting, but rather the ability to enter 2nd gear gate from 1st on upshift. It seems like I'm getting blocked.
I can get into 1st when rolling slowly no problem. I do feel the "block" sometimes when going a little faster, but blip the throttle and it seems to open the gate up. I don't see the need to go into 1st if you're moving fast enough anyway, 2nd gear is fine to take off with at that point.

In the Netherlands we drive manual for the majority, automatic is the exception. It is taught to shift to first when car is at standstill to prevent lock up of wheels. However, having driven manuals myself since 1998 and being in cars with many others (in manuals) I can tell you you that a lot of people shift to first to prevent the car to stutter at low rev in second. In second at low speeds you. It's fine, just don't have high revs, or do it when there is ice on the road.
