In the Netherlands we drive manual for the majority, automatic is the exception. It is taught to shift to first when car is at standstill to prevent lock up of wheels. However, having driven manuals myself since 1998 and being in cars with many others (in manuals) I can tell you you that a lot of people shift to first to prevent the car to stutter at low rev in second. In second at low speeds you. It's fine, just don't have high revs, or do it when there is ice on the road.
