Metalic Clunking Noise During Acceleration

Anyone else experience this? It only happens during acceleration and/or when I'm coming to a stop. I brought it in to the dealership and they said I need to replace my rear diff which is about 5000 just for the part. I checked my suspension and brakes prior to this. Need some opinions here please.

**it doesn't sound like the "cowbell" noise**

Well, if you are still under warranty, just get it changed!

For that money, I'd go with an aftermarket IF it really is the diff. I'd double check the guibo first, it's cheap and easy to check out.

That is the thing. He may say it's the rear diff, but it could be something else more simple. Anyone else had this problem and the tech said its the rear diff?

The noise comes from the driverside and under the car.

Is the noise continuous or do you just get one metallic clunk as you start to accelerate. I had a metallic clunk that sounded like a tap on the hollow drive shaft with a hammer. It would make a single metallic 'ting' noise upon introduction of load, or removal of load to the drive line. The drive shaft has 4 components that could cause this noise, all appeared to look in fantastic shape and no sign of excessive play. Rather than start replacing each piece till problem was solved I changed whole driveshaft as it was only about $750 for part and not a hard job to do, about an hour with a lift. It is quiet as ever now. I would definitely get second opinion before throwing a diff at it, unless you're dealing with an 'extremely' competent shop....which is rare to find these days. Post a vid with noise might help others help you better.

Sound like the exact problem that is described in SI B33 04 08. There is a thread on it on this forum but it also comes up if you Google it. I'm getting mine checked out by an indy in a few weeks.
