2013 335is to 2013 M3
Thoughts... Have a 2013 335is with Stage 2 Dinan with over 400 lbs or torque. Opportunity has come up for a new 2013 M3 for a decent price. Have read posts where people have switched, love the M3 but miss the torque of their cars ie 335is with tune etc. Have had M3's in the past and knd of miss them. The V8 is nice and the growl is distinctive. What is the opinion of the well versed M3 forum. Any pros or cons appreciated. Thanks.

I went to the M3 from a 135i with a cobb, not 400 lbs of tq, but still punchy. I don't miss it one bit, the M3 rides like it's on rails. Way more fun.

Stage 2 is no joke for the 335is. It's crazy fast, and probably as fast, if not faster than the stock M3.
That said, hard to say whether you'll be satisfied as you'll have to rev the M3 up to extract all the goodies of the engine. The intangible side of things is, you're effectively left Magic the Gathering club and joined the varsity football team. lol. |

I went from an N54 powered 1 series to an S65 powered one. Yes, there is less torque on the s65 but it is just as fast. When you track or drive it hard and really rev it up, the power is there and it is instant and doesn't fade from heat soak. The M3 suspension and cooling is far superior to a non m ( unless it is modified with m3 parts).
Both are good cars, it really just boils down to what you value. Do you want to feel quick around town on low revs, have easy tuning or build a straight line drag car? if so, 335is is great. Do you want a high revving, better cooling, better handling more track ready car? then M3. |

I went from a stock 2011 335is to a 2013 E92 M3. The biggest upgrade is in the handling department, you just can't compare the suspension setup between the two. While I liked the 335is' exhaust note, the M3's is on another plane, especially with aftermarket cans.

Kept my stage 2/race gas cobb 335I, and went with an M3 DCT. Unless my 335I has it's race gas tune, M3=King. Not sure about manual though cuz DCT M3 has different gearing. You won't miss the Torque. It will be replaced by high rpm power which is true to what they say about it: Very, Very addicting!

I have an F80 now which is even more fun to drive than the E90 M3 but the difference in fun factor is not as great as 335is to E9x M3- that's a big jump.

Only thing I miss from my E90 are the downshift blips on DCT which sound more aggressive- that's it. Car is much louder than stock E9x too- you'll love it.

Albeit a great car, the 335is didn't put the car industry on it's heels as did the M3 in 2007/8 with it's introduction. The 335is is more like a car assembled from the leftover parts catalog at the end of the E92 run.

Both. Sounds a bit louder inside with windows up and a lot louder outside in comparison to the E9x. Main differences are that most of the stock S65 sound came from the intake and engine, the stock exhaust wasn't very loud. F80 is the opposite, in Sport plus the exhaust is very loud. Under no load if you rev at idle the S55 doesn't sound that great but under acceleration from 2500 rpm onwards it creates a great sound. Very different to anything I've heard before, doesn't sound like a traditional straight 6 - it's mean and has a dark note to it with a metallic rasp past 5500rpm. When you lift off the throttle after acceleration it pops and bangs.
I genuinely prefer the sound aspect of the car to my E90 M3, it is much louder even at lower rpm where the E90 was quiet until the higher rpms. Of course there are many E9x with Eisenmann Race or equivalent aftermarket exhausts that make the car sound unbelievable but stock for stock I prefer F80 sound apart from when downshifting from high rpms where I prefer E90. Edit: just realised I'm jacking this thread, apologies OP. If anyone wants opinion on F80 PM me. Back on topic- OP- go for the E92 M3, you will not regret it!

Didn't know Dinan Stage 2 does not address suspension as well. I assume this is the power package:
http://dinancars.com/product/d900-30...-335i-535i-z4/ Aside from that, I don't think the M3 has any additional structural welds or braces that makes the car "handle" better. Though I am aware of the aluminum intensive suspension components...admittedly, I'm not well read on whether Dinan Stage 2 even has a comprehensive suspension upgrade. Come to think of it, to the extent possible, you should swap out for E92 M3 suspension components on the 335is and call it a day. Last edited by Flying Ace; 07-22-2014 at 04:28 PM.. |
