Question regarding BMW performance steering wheel
So I have been reading a bit about the BMW performance steering wheel. Looks beautiful!
I am talking about the one with the orange display at the top (or the OLED display on the newer V2 one). Aside from being a beautiful addition to my car, I was hoping this would help with an 'issue' I have. I have a 6MT and whenever I ride with the music up (often, but not always) I find myself looking at the RPM gauge frequently to check when to change gears as I cannot hear the motor too well. Mostly an issue in city driving, which like many, constitutes about 95% of my driving. So I have seen in a few images that there is a setting in there that allows you to set a RPM for when to 'advise' you to change gears using the lights. Is this correct? How does this work? Could I do something like this: Set the lights to go to "max" at lets say 3000 RPM, where I usually like to up shift. Thanks! |

Yes you can set the shift lights to a desired RPM. I have the wheel and love it. The wheel comes with an extensive instruction manual that tells you how to adjust the shift lights. I recommend this as a nice interior upgrade. The only down side is the wheel doesn't come with the M tricolor stitching like the stock wheel, but rather a silver stitching.

do the shift lights come on regardless weather the "power" button is turned on or not?
im asking because (perhaps this is not normal but...) the shift recommendation notification on the cluster (between the speedo and rpm guages) do not show up for me unless the power button is turned off. i'm guessing this is because bmw feels if you have the power button on, you are not in "efficient dynamics" mode. When you start the car you have to press the two buttons (10 and 2 o'clock) on the wheel to turn on the digital display. This also activates the shift lights. The display will automatically turn of after about ten minutes unless you repress a button, but the shift light will still work even though the display is off. There are 4 display modes to choose from. Efficient dynamics, sport, race and settings. I usually keep the display in sport mode and on oil and water temp for normal driving. When I hit the twisties I change to G force display. I think there are some videos on this forum showing the display functions. Do a search and you can probably find them.

Efficient dynamics displays fuel consumption and adjusts the shift lights for improved gas mileage as well as other stuff. Sport has oil and water temps and G meters. Race has 1/4 mile, lap times etc...
