pass left keep right!!!

hey guys,

i'm trying to initiate a state law in Maryland for the following; any suggestions/ideas on how to move it along with a serious look by the senate would be appreciated!!! I've already started a dialogue with my state senator and considered starting an online petition

Ways with speed limit of 55 or more miles per hour. An operator driving on a limited-access way with a speed limit of 55 or more miles per hour is restricted in ordinary operation to the right-hand lane and may use adjacent lanes for overtaking and passing another vehicle, but must return to the right-hand lane at the earliest opportunity. This requirement does not apply to an authorized emergency vehicle, or to a vehicle otherwise directed by posted signs, a law enforcement officer or a highway maintenance crew.

Haha this has been a law in Connecticut forever, but NOTHING stops people from camping out in the left lane going 55 and holding up everyone else.

Nobody gives a fck about the law or common courtesy.

That's a sweet video. As for the law, it really could only apply during periods/in locations of low traffic, and the only people who care are speeders, so despite it making sense, you really just can't legislate away the assholes/unaware idiots. Those people are going to involve themselves in your life, and usually for the worse. Just ask Seinfeld and his smashed 911 ...

People need to also use their turn signals. I can't read people's minds when they just start wandering leisurely into another lane.

you think people actually know or follow obscure traffic laws, especially when police won't enforce anything other than reckless and speeding?

So you want them to enact a law to keep those who obey the speed limit in the right lane, keeping the left lane on for those who wish to exceed the legal limit?

Crazy, right? Actually, I propose the "get your head out of your ass" morality law, which enables citizens who refrain from speeding to actually travel LESS than the posted speed limit...IN THE PASSING LANE...in order to harass and encumber those that do not, all in the name of safety. It'll be great. A regular Bavarian-like utopia!

EDIT: Sorry, OP. Here's your can of worms back...

It shouldn't matter what your speed is. The left lane should be for passing only. If you want to overtake someone, move to the left, pass, then return to the right lanes. That's how the law is supposed to be. You get all sorts of people riding in the left lane for miles holding people up.

it's written to say as long as motorist drives up to the speed limit, they should use the left lane to pass.

Haven't you taken a traffic class before? It's a common question on the tests:

Q: At what speed can you use to pass someone in the left lane? Trick question! - Answer: the speed limit.

Mind blown huh?

don't ask me how I know.

This is the law in the UK. It doesn't make much difference - in reasonably busy traffic (when this would be helpful) all it takes is one Muppet in the right hand lane doing 65 and you can have a queue of cars a mile long wanting to do 70. The inside lane with the truck doing 64.999 mph is empty for that mile.

The free for all in the states actually in busy upto very busy conditions as it reduces interaction between vehicles and make better use of road space which is what shows people down in the first place.

(Think hose pipe with a pinch in it. It takes higher speed to get more water through it. A hose without a pinch can transport more water even though some of that water is going slower than the water jetting out of the pinched hose)

Here in georgia we have a The "Slow Poke" Law: Slow drivers in the left lane will now be ticketed in Georgia. Still haven't seen any pulled over for that yet?

Exactly. It's like this here in Northern AZ as well. I40 is full of scrotum sacks going 62mph in a 75mph zone. Then you get the truckers who pass uphill at 57mph.
