CarPlay?
Does anyone know if CarPlay will ever make it to our cars (F80/F82)? I have a new M3 on order, and currently use an Android phone. Contemplating a switch to the new iPhone (when it comes out) if I get more functionality in the car...not to mention CarPlay some day.

BMW has announced that they will support Carplay. No announcement from them on Android support. Also no announcement on when this will happen.
I'm holding up on ordering until I know my car will have or can be coded to have Carplay. |

I was told by the dealer to get the upgraded phone connection in order to support Carplay when it comes out. It will just be a software upgrade if you have that package, but if you don't, it might require some coding to get it.

From BMW's perspective, I don't see why they would abandon iDrive for CarPlay. Why would they use something that only works with iPhone 5x? Rather, I'm assuming (I have no idea what they are really doing, just speculating) they are trying to figure out how to integrate CarPlay into their existing systems. They are probably doing the same with Android Auto.
Other car companies are also grappling with this. See here. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out but I think it will take longer than everyone expects. Right now, I can't even use most of the Office features in iDrive because iPhone is not supported. The hype is not matching the reality. |
