Road Rash

Just picked up my new used E90 and detailed it all afternoon, wash/clay/wash/wax. I noticed quite a bit of road rash behind the tires on the side skirts - more than I would expect to see for a car with 14k miles. The hood and front clip are almost perfect - only behind the wheels.

Previous owner ran spacers? (bought mine from a dealer)

Is it just the nature of the beast?

Or tracked. Track tires throw all kinds of crap up at the paint.

That too. What do you mean road rash? Like it has been rubbed away by the tire or has lots of chunks thrown at it? Pics will do wonders.

That's bound to happen if you drive her! And being in Michigan doesn't help. Congrats on the purchase.

Thanks! Car was originally located in South Dakota. Do they have tracks in SD? :-/

Not sure about tracks, but they salt/sand the shit out of their roads in the winter.

that's the thing, this car seen only 4-5k miles per year and the under carriage doesn't have a spec of rust on it!

checked a few other local CPO M3's and there is a little bit, but not as bad. Mileage is about the same but without ZCP.

I'm confused...

Can't imagine S. Dakota roads are much better.

If you take the phone light to the side skirts right behind the front wheels you'll probably see some of the same. It's pretty much inevitable, track or not. If you really want to see her flaws, explore with a shop light on it in the dark garage. Or just drive and forget about it!

OP, is it DCT? Just messing with you. I wouldn't worry about it, just enjoy the car.

Repaint the side skirts

I've had that issue on a 2006 S4 a long time ago I bought CPO with 20K miles. Perfect. Few weeks later noticed same thing -- tons of (to me) inexplicable road wear on the side skirts and underside of rear bumper.

I got them redone at a really good shop (not just "any body shop for a respray sort of thing" -- a really top notch shop) -- you'll be happy. <$1K and you won't think about it anymore.

OP, if not too bad already - give it a good rubb polish and add clear wrap.
Have clear bra but come to think of it I'll get some here as well as DD incl winter...

Unless the length if the side skirts are scratched up I'd bet it's not track related.

OP - I have the same type of paint wear on my sides directly behind the front wheels and some on the leading side of the rear arches. I describe it as a lightly sand-blasted look.

I've tried polish and swirl-mark remover and it helped some. Next step is to get a buffer wheel.

The F80 M3's have factory clear-bra on the leading edge of the rear fender arches, likely due to customer complains on the E9X.

Thanks M.Hagen, appreciate that feedback. Dealership will probably look at me funny (it's a used car ), then ill take it to my body shop to clean up and get clear schmutz.

+1 for the respray and clear bra. It's what I plan on doing for mine once the winter comes around (she goes into semi storage).

The prior owner could have lived on a dirt/gravel road or drove on one regularly too perhaps.

I had some rash on my M5 behind the front tires probably from using wide wheels/R-comps, but it was more on the fender surface. 5+ years ago I used Dr Color Chip on it, and it still looks great today. Here's the post I did on the M5board back then.

The OP cares or he wouldn't have bothered to create a new thread and ask the question.
