The M3 Jerk Dance

I've searched this topic and still have not found a reasonably good explanation. Sometimes in the most aggressive settings with my 2013 DCT in sport plus and S4 or S5, with the car warmed up, going from 1st to 2nd can be choppy/jerky and a heck of a ride. Literally like a bucking bronco with all 414 ponies trying to get out at once. The car is warm, the throttle is pressed evenly and smoothly, and this still happens. No special tune for the DCT software and the car has done this since it was new from the dealer. I don't think this is a defect as I have heard of this complaint before, but does anybody have an explanation for why this actually happens? Just the vagaries of the DCT or something else? . Thanks.

Throttle input may not be as smooth as you think. Usually a result of foot movement. Usually happens at gradual throttle not heavy throttle.

This. Most likely driver induced oscillation. It happens to is all.

I have this issue too. I've solved the problem by either being in 2nd gear at low speed, or using more throttle to prevent it.

It was so embarrassing when I first bought the car. In first the car has a lot of grunt and combined with the very sensitive throttle it happens if you don't really put your foot down. It happens more with the M button or power button pressed.

S4 S5? You mean you let the car shift for you, like an automatic?

Always bugged me when it happened, usually before the car warmed up.
One of the things I didn't like about the car.

Don't think it ever happened to me once the engine was warmed up.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be sure to give it more gas to try and prevent this. Makes sense that it will tend to occur when you feather the throttle as opposed to just going for it. I believe S4 and S5 are sequential mode, so user controlled shifts with the DCT. D mode would be fully automated, but I'm not about to start a DCT auto versus manual debate!

Sounds like the same thing that happens when someone is learning to drive a manual and they don't give it enough gas, car starts to buck.

My 6MT E92 did the same thing, always when cold. Feathering the clutch or more gas than is usually required at that speed remedied it. I've been driving manual cars for more than 20 years.

Ahh...the famous S65 buck. lol Happened to me when I first bought the car. I was super embarrassed when people saw that especially since I've been driving a manual for over 15 years! I've learned to avoid it...only happens when my car is cold or warming up. Just need to be easy on the throttle during that period until temp has been reached.

By the way, I have a manual and this happens to me as well. If I let the car idle for a couple of minutes before taking off it doesn't happen. I think it's just the nature of these motors. None of my other manual cars are as finicky as this one is with driving when stone cold.

Yes - don't worry - this will go away with time as you get used to the throttle - very rarely happened to me after the first few months I had the car (had it for over 6 years)....

I thought this was about how if you google "BMW drivers" that "jerk" is one of the first adjectives that pops up.

Using the sport setting rather than sport+ for the throttle would help .

this also happens in the 6MT when the transmission is cold.

You should take it out of Sport + and just go with normal on the street...
