Help? Buy new 2013 E92 leftover or 2015 M4?
Hello forum,
so I have this tough choice.. and I will be posting on both F forum and here. I understand its a tough question since people who have either one of the cars maybe biased. But please help !!!! So I ordered a manual M4 a few months ago that arrives next week. But last week, I discovered one of my dealers is selling a brand new left-over 2013 M3 in a spartan configuration. The choice is really tough. Let me say I used to have 2011 M3 and was the best 'conventional' car I ever owned. I have also tested on the road the new M4 numerous times and quite extensively...well the last 3 months spent some time visiting different dealers. Overall the perceptual differences when driving are huge, but not necessarily worse than before. As you can imagine, in particular differences on the steering and throttle response. What would you guys do? Should I back off on the M4 and grab that beautiful masterpiece? or stick with the latest BMW's technological M-marvel? It seems for both cars I will have to pay MSRP ...the price difference is close to identical, and I absolutely don't care about depreciation. Just a nice practical ride to keep for a longggg time. |

It really is your decision and there are no wrong answers here. Does the 2013 have every option you want / don't want? If not, I'd pass on it because you'll always kick yourself for picking it up a car that wasn't "perfect." I ended up trading in my 2010 in for this very reason.
It's good you don't care about depreciation because the 2013 will drop much faster than the 2015. Long term though, having a final production car is worth more than having a first year model car. Something to consider (even though you said you don't care about this much). Interested to hear what you decide on. The new car is better in just about every performance metric but may not ultimately be what you are looking for in a new car. |

Yes it is better, but unless if you track it , there is no way on earth you will ever find your self confirming this--assuming you would like to maintain your proper 'driving career' in the US or any modern country...

i would never pick a F80 over a E92. unless i was trying to impress people with my new M car. So if you dont care to have the newest car, get the E92. IMO its such a classic car already.

Although I 100% agree with Ezio, go with what you like.

I bought my brand new E92 M3 6 months ago for about invoice. I would suggest that you try to get it for below MSRP. Especially considering that your warranty length may be less depending on the in service date. This is my first M car and love it. So I have no basis to compare it to the F82. However, as a general principle I try to avoid the first generation of any technologically advanced product until the kinks have been ironed out.

You will get a lot of one sided answers on here as seen above.
My main concern is, what did the car go through in the past year? It's hard to believe that there is a brand new e92 M3 sitting in a lot somewhere because I remember them being quite popular with all the rumors of BMW going back to i6. It was possibly a demo car. You said the e92 is "spartan", so I'm guessing that means cloth seats and no idrive. If that's what you want fine, but I would definitely need leather and idrive. Lastly, I would not pay retail for the e92…The car will literally depreciate a huge chunk the moment you drive off. The e9x M3 is a great car, but if I were in your shoes, I'd choose the f8x any day built specifically to my taste. If you must get an e9x, look for a CPO or a well maintained low mileage cars for sale privately for a fair price.

Thats a good question...
presumably, the dealer 'held' it because was a left over and spartan, nobody would buy it so it stayed on the lot for a year buried. Has 8 miles on it.. so It can't be a demo.. I think there is idrive but no navigator...and yes, cloth seats The precise argument that they had is the manager 'believes' this will be a classic and they took it off the market for a while they told me they don't care if they sell it this year. and they are convinced it will sell above MSRP soon... you know ...the usual dealer games ! I understand the car price will get hit right away once I walk off the door, but this has nothing to do with the value of the car. I think, If someone is insane enough to pay 70+K for an isolated M4 with twin turbo, that is 35% made in undisclosed countries, should be equally or more eager to pay for the famous V8...that is 95% german made Quote:

Both look good inside and out Both handle extremely well Steering is really pretty good in the M4 Both have a great ride/handling balance It really comes down to one decision..... Do you want the car that is faster, or the one that is subjectvely more enjoyable? If the former, then get the f8x. If the latter, then the e9x.

I would not buy a nearly 2 model year old car for MSRP. Also, it's not really a "brand new car." It's been sitting around, perhaps out in the weather, so the rubber components have already weathered some time. Have they run the engine periodically? I don't think it's good when a car just sits there unused for a long period of time. Maybe a low mile used E92 may be a better option.

If I wanted a 2013 instead of the M4, I'd look around and buy a very low mileage car from a caring original owner. I guess it's a personal thing with me...I'd never cough up MSRP on a two year old car a dealer has sitting on his lot since he's just waiting for an easy "mark" to come along.

Run a CarFax on it...
Just sounds suspicious. They just "buried" the value of $70k? No. - V .

Either m4 or lower mileage 12 or 13 M3. Only a complete fool would pay msrp for that car. And they will probably find one. Don't let it be you. I'd even argue to pick up a low mileage m3 and in 2 years trade it in on M4 that you will be able to get close to invoice.

+1 paying MSRP is crazy. If it is/was that popular, why do they still have it 2 years later?? If they are serious about selling it, they'll move off of MSRP. If not, well...that's probably why they still have it. Don't be the fool that gives them what they want. I would take MSRP, subtract what it books out now (2 years old) and maybe give them the now price plus 1/2 of the difference as an offer. That's only if I really wanted it. Either way, you will take a bath on that car. I know you plan on keeping it forever, but you never know what life will throw at you. The dealer is feeding you a line of crap...but...that's what dealers do.

By the way, BMW San Francisco appears to have a 2013 E92 M3 in frozen white. I think it has been a showroom queen for them for a long time. Mine was a frozen silver with 15 miles that was sitting in the showroom for months in Orange County. BMW SF initially tried to do that special individual color mark-up and now they have it listed for MSRP on their website. Maybe they will deal and give you some leverage if you go this route on this other car you're talking about. Any idea of the production date on the car you're looking at? BMW Encinitas has 3 E93 M3s still sitting in their lot. I don't think it's unusual for these to still be out there, but surely the dealers must be willing to negotiate at this stage. |
