This technique has always worked for me:
- Air out tires - Two wheels face to face with a few cardboard pieces in between - Few pieces of cardboard on opposite ends - Stretch wrap (saran wrap) them real good with some straps. Here are some HRE wheels off my GTR I sent out last year: |

Honestly not sure, but my friend/shop that I shipped the wheels through told me to do so. Maybe save a little weight?
Although I'm sure if any weight is saved it wouldn't be enough to make a difference on cost. Not sure if they'll actually ship it for you, but maybe pack it for you? I'd try a local car performance shop near you. |

I just shipped a set of wheels and tires form my Porsche and took them to FedEx ground. I kept the old card board from when I purchased and used packing tape to wrap around the tires several times to keep the cardboard in place. Very easy other than taking to FedEx. And I kept the air in them
