Anyone ran the tank dry?

I'm interrested to know how long you can go after I-drive say 0 miles to empty. I filled up at 1 mile to empty today and no symptoms of starvation.

I usually fill at the first opportunity after the low fuel warning but it's good to know what the absolute limit is.

Listen to me. When that car rolls into that dealership, and that tank is bone dry, I want you to be there with me when everyone says, "Kramer and that other guy, oh, they went further to the left of the slash than anyone ever dreamed!"

This almost happened to me. Peter said zero, I was in a really bad neighborhood and in a miniskirt. The only scary day I've had on the road.

I've gone about ten miles past "----", but it still only took 15 gal. So figure another 5 to 10 miles until it will no longer run.

By the way, for anyone not aware, it's bad for the pump to run it dry since the fuel lubricates it. So avoid doing that.

Also, any sediment in the gas settles at the bottom of the tank, and as you get to the last little bits of gas in the tank, this sediment gets stirred up and gets sucked in the intake. Sure, the fuel filter takes care of most of it, but why risk it?

Same thing with water in the gas, by the way.

Best practice is to never run it below about a quarter of the tank. Sure, you most likely won't hurt anything, but you are going to have to fill it up anyways, why not do it sooner rather than later?

You never run the tank near dry for 3 reasons. (1) Fuel pumps need fuel going through the gear for lubrication. (2) Fuel pumps get hot, the fuel in your tank help keep it from overheating. (3) Once the fuel is low, your pump will start picking up debris that was settled in your gas tank which lead to clogged fuel strainer/filer/injectors.

Keep it about 1/4 tank if possible.

Bravo, this is all I could think about, too.

Unfortunately I've had to witness that, and I think there should be a law against it.
